The Groundhog Day poll caught me on a day when I had a pretty nasty head cold. Spending the next 30 years with a runny nose, sore throat, and headache didn’t seem all that appealing. On a day when I’m feeling relatively healthy, I’m definitely going for it. ---

Hmm. I have a jar of beans that i sometimes use as pie weights. Does that count? The jar is labeled, “pie weights”, so i won’t accidentally try to cook with the ancient and overly-dry beans. ---

We have a little bag of pie weights. I could just as easily use coins, but I kinda like the weights. ---

Breakfast: Usually a freshly nuked chimichanga or sausage muffin/biscuit, but occasionally a bowl of cereal/leftover pizza/something else. Fast food drive-in: How far from the restaurant am I when I discover the mistake? Depending on the type of mistake, I may just eat it anyway. Beach: Hot sun, sand everywhere. Heck, no – I won’t go! Home footwear: Barefoot unless I actually got dressed and went somewhere; if so, I take off my shoes but leave my socks on. ---

I know what pie weights are. I don’t think I have any, but I’m not at all sure. There’s a batch of inherited kitchen stuff in the attic and there might, or might not, be some in there. I don’t generally use recipes that bake the pie shell separately. ---

I’ve tried it a couple of times. I don’t do that, either. But i still have the jar of ruined beans that would be perfectly useful if i decide to try again. ---

I’ve got some old dry beans hanging around which would be a lot easier to find than the possible pie weights that might or might not be in the attic. ---

Yeah, they work fine. Just put a piece of parchment paper between the beans and the crust, so you can neatly remove all the beans. ---

You could use a piece of a brown paper bag, or even a piece of cotton cloth. Anything that won’t burn or melt at cooking temp and that you don’t mind touching your food. ---

It would pause all _meaningful_ relationships (like with my wife), but at least I wasn’t in the process of doing an endless repeat of some variation of XYZ First Dates. But I’d enjoy quite a bit of hedonistic luxury and consequence free spending and eating, but given the realities of modern American air travel, I can only go so far from my town with limited air service, and the time lost just getting a flight and getting to Denver semi-kills most options outside of hubs. So, I’d probably indulge for a few months, try to improve skills/other things for a few months, and within the 2-3 year max of this selection, be bored and ready to have some meaning and consequence in my life again. I strongly suspect that I’d be bored and stressed anywhere near the end of this timeframe, and setting it as a _minimum_ instead would be terrifying, even with the escape clause. Though I’m in my very early 50s, so I don’t have quite the incentive to put off time moving forward that some may have. ---

I use beans for pie weights just as any sane person would 🙂 No need to spend money for something when a perfectly cromulent substitute is already in the pantry. ---

If you give a cook a pie crust, they’re going to want some pie weights. If you give them pie weights, they will need parchment paper… ---
