Christ on a calliope, Mustard, _get a life!_" The only time my phone is on speaker in public is if I need to look at something on the phone; since my ears only hear & can’t see I will have it on speaker only long enough to look at whatever I need to look at & then take it off speaker & hold it back up to my ear like a phone should be held but that’s something like looking up an address or the picture you just sent me, _ **not** _ a whole conversation. ---

If I’m talking to a human being I hold my phone like a phone. If I have to deal with a menu I put the phone on speaker and open up the keypad until I’m through to a real person. Then I turn off the speaker and I use the phone in the accustomed manner. ---

I walk to my mailbox to get the mail six days a week. That’s about a twenty foot walk, outside. Sometimes that’s the only time I spend outside all day. But according to the OP, it counts. ---

Much of the time I’m wandering around in public I have headphones on/in, which connect to my phone and which have a microphone in them. So I just answer the phone and talk normally without having to hold the phone up or shout. Sometimes I’ll hold the phone openly to indicate to others around me that I am having a telephone conversation and not just rambling to myself like a crazy person which I also sometimes do. ---

There was a thing I heard of some years ago in which schizophrenics were being encouraged to wear bluetooth thingies as jewelry so that they could go about in public conversing with the voices and others would just think they were on the phone with someone. ---
