I am certain that the reasons (certified mileage) for window stickers play a big role in the US as well. Not to mention, cost savings. Heck, we live in a day and age where fundamental features of your car are being sold _back_ to you as live services to make the car an ongoing revenue stream. No spare is at least arguable.
I had a thread a while back on[my specific issues](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/calling-all-car-people-spare-tire-option-for-2025-prius-phev-se/1021703) with not having a spare, but I don’t expect them to apply to others. If you’re always within a urban or suburban area with services, you have a lot of options. And saving at the pump is more important than ever in terms of everyday expenses. I just wish they were a LOT more careful about explaining the consequences of the fix-a-flat option.

You know, I’ve never asked, any I’ve never taken notes while he does it.. He fills the basin, washes his face and gets it all soapy, shaves, then rinses everything into the sink, i think.

I do wonder about this. The biggest saving at the pump could be achieved by driving smaller vehicles, but American vehicles are on average FAR bigger than European cars. I get about 43mpg from my non-hybrid car on longer journeys, the boot (trunk) is quite small but I can fold the back seats down and carry loads of stuff (as long as I don’t want to also carry 4 or 5 people. “Gas” costs $8-$9 a (US) gallon here.

If people were _rational_ and _educated_ about their choices and priorities… well, let’s just say we would have about 1/2 (or less) of our current posts.
P&E and the Pit would be struggling to say the least!

I have a “tough beard,” so I absolutely must soak my face in hot, soapy water for at least a full minute, to soften the bristles enough that I won’t cut myself shaving.
When camping, say, this means I have to heat water over a stove. If there is no big enough container available, I can soak my face with hot, soapy, wet hand towels, but I’ll probably get a few small cuts.

True! That’s only happened a couple times.l, camping per se.
But I have been in many situations where I did need to shave and there wasn’t a (large enough) sink with hot water, or any sink, or any hot water from the tap. Typically in cheap or rustic lodgings in Mexico and the like (I lived in a very rural, poor part of Mexico for a while, for example).

Most of my life I pronounced it like appellation, but 20 years ago my niece went to Appalachian State University and schooled me on the correct pronunciation.

The Appies run from Newfoundland to Georgia, maybe even further south, and there are regional variations in the correct pronunciation.

The last syllable is sometimes “gun,” sometimes “gone” for me. “Oregone is in the Pacific Northwest. I’ve stayed in Portland, Oregun.”

Needed “other” for Apple-AY-chun (not “shun” — never heard that).
Occasionally I’ll say “Apple-A\*-chun,” which is supposedly more “correct.”
But never “shun.”
\*as in “ham” or “sandwich”

Also, if someone tailgates me, i sometimes show down, and sometimes maintain speed, but I always look for a chance to change lanes. I’m not interested in “winning” that fight, i want to get away from the asshole.

I’m usually on two lane roads; changing lanes isn’t an option (other than by pulling off on the shoulder to let them pass, which I will sometimes do, if there’s a good shoulder and a longish straight stretch, which there isn’t always.)
And that was supposed to be up to three choices, not five; but I hit the wrong thing and it wasn’t worth starting over to change it.

Tailgating: if they want to pass me, I’ll either slow down to encourage that, or move over, or both. I drive pretty fast, so if someone is tailgating me, usually it’s because they want to drive at unsafe speeds. I’d rather they be ahead of me.
