The word “baklava” is of Turkish origin, where it’s pronounced with the stress on the final syllable. Ditto for its borrowings into Greek and Armenian, whose speaker communities also had a significant role in introducing the dish to the Anglosphere. If, like me, you were first served baklava by a native Greek, Turk, or Armenian, then you probably learned the pronunciation with the stress on the last syllable, and you may even prefer it despite this stress pattern being unusual in English. If the dish reached you via a more indirect route, then it’s more likely your pronunciation uses a more typically English stress pattern. ---

It also wouldn’t surprise me if there are people who try to pronounce “baklava” similarly to how they pronounce “balaclava.” ---

I couldn’t get to sleep last night and for some reason I thought of the Dick and Jane books and couldn’t remember the name of their cat. As one does. The cat’s name is Puff. Upon looking it up, I found that in the 1930s the cat was named Little Mew. Her new name started in 1940. All Ball is the cat who belonged to Koko the gorilla. It seems others don’t remember, either. ---

I think we had a Dick & Jane knockoff in K and 1st grade (late 1960s). I think the dog’s name was Flip. ---

My dryer plays a stupid song when the drying is done. It took me awhile to figure out how to disable it. I don’t remember exactly when I bought the dryer, but it was more than 15 years ago. ---

I didn’t learn to read from the Dick and Jane books, but I had to read them anyway. I thought they were very boring. I picked the correct name out of a list of four, but if you’d just asked me out of the blue what the cat’s name was and not provided a short list, I’d have said I had no idea. ---

Our dryer issues three monotonic dings when it is finished. On the other hand, our oven sounds the three key notes of the song Camelot. I’ll bet you can hear that last one in your head now. When I click the unlock on the car, by the way, it sounds four notes, in a sequence 1, 23, 4, like the opening notes of the song Ana Ng. Thank you for listening. ---

Our dryer doesn’t make any noise when finished. Our washer, however, plays a snippet of Schubert’s _Die Forelle_. I am yet to tire of this. ---

I happened to first hear of musical dryers in the same week as this poll (my wife visited a friend who has one).
