> I have posted my short tale of woe in similar threads, but in the name of saving someone else the same shameful disaster I went through…
>
> I used to kick the handles on toilets/urinals for years.
> Then, one fine afternoon in the “head” on board the U.S.S. Nimitz, I finished my business and dutifully flushed. The valve stuck open, leaving the urinal in a permanent flush mode.
>
> I decided that a swift kick to the valve would un-stick it. Poor judgment on my part. The valve broke off at the pipe and I was immediately struck in the chest by a two-inch wide jet of seawater straight from Puget Sound . They use “firemain” water for toilets on ships, at 150psi (much more than typical homes), so we’re talking about a solid powerful jet of water shooting horizontal across the bathroom to the other wall.
>
> The water began to collect. Within mere seconds, it seemed that there were two inches of water on the floor.
>
> I quickly left the bathroom, like a coward, as one does when a toilet overflows.
>
> Moments later, I realized that this was probably more serious than an overflowed toilet, and my conscience made me call the emergency number and announce “flooding”.
>
> How awful. They got on the PA system, announcing “Flooding, flooding in compartment x-y-z, blah blah blah.” Shortly thereafter a gang of folks came, loaded for bear, ready to handle my unintentional flood. I did not linger at the scene of the crime.
> Don’t kick urinal handles. If one must use the toe, do it gingerly, keeping in mind that there exist booby traps in this world in the guise of urinals, with weak pipe connections.
>
> (Of course, most opponents to the toe-tap maneuver have other reasons for their displeasure)

Ayup, someone did the same thing one year back when I was in college, on the day before classes began. Around 5-6 PM, this idjit flushed with his foot, broke off the handle, and proceeded to flood the whole dorm floor, side to side. Ruined carpet, ruined everything on the floor for people who weren’t in their rooms to pile stuff on the bed.

Did I mention that we were on the 6th floor? Before they got it turned off, water was dripping from the first floor ceiling. At least I wasn’t on one of the floors _under_ the flood. Total catastrophe.

Never flush with your foot!

re: dirty toilets

Are the office toilets cleaned daily? If not, you might want to contact the housekeeping staff.

If the toilet/s is/are dirty, on a regular basis, you are all exposed to some pretty nasty micro-organisms. What does the local Health Authority say?

I’ve worked in a hospital for … ages and ages. I fully agree with the ‘foot flush’
and it works a treat on those “push to flush” toilets, too. However, filthy toilets are a health hazard - get Authority involved ASAP because there will be a direct link between bathroom dirt and sick/absentee staff.

You either have to have the facilities cleaned twice a day minimum OR inquire as to the local rules and regs for cleanliness. And agitate!!

PS People who hover are not well. Treat them with gentleness.

“Ass-gaskets”

Hey, I learned something today! Of course I probably forgot something to make room too, but… 😕

Whatever the motivations for not wanting to sit or touch the flusher barehanded, I don’t get why people can’t just take the 30 seconds to wipe off the seat with some of the damn toilet paper that’s RIGHT THERE and use a paper towel or a catcher’s mitt or something to protect their fingies from the flush handle. It’s like common courtesy goes right out the window in the washroom.

I now feel more thankful for working in an office relatively uninhabited by hoverers, piss sprayers, and other WC malcontents.

Still have a few of those blokes who retreat into the stall to urinate. Bizarre.
