If we remove that assumption of folks being disingenuous, your complaint is something like this: When I was younger, I encountered a number of people that seemed to believe and I’m pretty sure did believe that saying something contradictory to their opponent refuted that opponent’s argument. I speculate that as those sorts get older they learn… not to be so confrontational.
