Disney characters in theme parks - which ones can and can't talk?

Yes, at the MGM Studios. My daughter had her photo taken with Kim and Ron Stoppable. Made her entire year!

Dude, you don’t know the half of it. I actually asked Dale (Chip? The one with the black nose) out one time (while in costume). We agreed on a time and place without her ever once saying a word.

 What were they doing that was rude? Saying nasty things about Cinderella?

How’d you know it was a she?

Nothing really offensive. My 14-year-old nephew had braces, so they commented on the “jewelry” he was wearing and asked if he was a rich prince where he was from. (That is, they were fishing for a rich prince they could marry.) I can’t remember what else they said, but it was funny. If you go to Disneyworld, they’re fun to meet. (We met them in the alley to the side of Cinderella’s Castle.)

Didn’t really. My buddy and I were in the restaurant at the Contemporary eating breakfast. We’d been out late the night before and I was taking some hair of the dog (vodka from a flask mixed with the breakfast OJ). Dale came over and was playing with us (in character), I was young enough and drunk enough to roll the dice. It helped that the Dale character stands about 5’3" so I figured it more than likely had to be a woman and I knew enough from going to FSU that most of the characters were college kids (lots of theater majors from FSU work the parks over the summer/fall), so I took the shot. Figured if I missed my guess, I would go on the date and be polite, but non-committal. Fortunately, I guessed right and had a fantastic time. She told me later that she’d been flirted with lots of times, but I was the only one she’d ever met that was brave enough to actually commit ‘sight unseen’

My best friend’s sister is a “face” performer at Disney World and has been for several years. She started as one of the princesses but has since added a few more characters (another princess and one of the new Tinkerbell’s friend fairies) to her repertoire. I’m told that part of the process for getting a face part involves actually having your face measured with calipers. Being Snow White or whoever isn’t just a matter of putting on the dress and saying “Hello there, I’m Snow White!”, your facial features and body type have to be considered an acceptable match for the particular character you want to play. For instance, Snow White is allowed to have a slightly bigger waist than the other princesses.

The face performers make more money than the masked roles (both are paid by the hour, but it’s something like $8/hr for masked and $12/hr for face), which always seemed a bit unfair to me. I guess the logic is that anyone at all who’s the right height can go in the Mickey costume while only women with the right features can be Snow White, but being a masked character must be a lot more uncomfortable.

FWIW, although my friend’s sister has been happy with her job, she’s now something of an old-timer among the performing cast. The turnover rate is pretty high, and it’s fairly rare for anyone to last more than a couple of summers. The sister also says that most of the other princesses are (perhaps predictably) divas/bitches and most of the princes are gay. One notable exception to the latter was a guy who seemed to think that playing Prince Charming meant he was Prince Charming, and took a long time to accept the fact that my friend’s sister really didn’t want to go out with him.

She’s too young for you, anyway. Go with Erin Esurance, the Kim Possible for adults.

Chip… he has a chocolate chip nose (as was explained to me by one of the handlers when I commented I couldn’t tell them apart).

Maybe it’s just the late-night-and-I’m-supposed-to-be-grading factor, but I just can’t stop laughing over this.

You are aware that KP graduated high school, right? She’s completely legal now.

ETA: Course, Ron or his baby sister might beat you up…

Assuming the photos in this thread (another board) are legit, I don’t think I’d have recognized her as Kim Possible if I did see her walking about. They also say that she’s no long out and about.

Cool !! Thanks !!

At Tokyo Disney Resort, just about all of the face characters come from Europe, North America or Australia/New Zealand. They are all expected to speak in English to guests. However, many use certain Japanese phrases for the younger guests.

That’s hot!

You can either try the website or go to their TDA building on Ball Road (its the big yellow building that’s all wavy). They have applications inside and the receptionist can usually give you a list of what kind of jobs they are looking to hire. I got mine at a job fair at a local mall. Just picked up an application form, sent it, then they called me a few weeks later for an interview. It helps that I wasnt applying for any specialized job at the time (just a restaurant cashiering job)

On a personal note, DONT WORK FOR DISNEY! THEY ARE EVIL AND WILL SUCK YOUR SOUL DRY!

I’ve always thought it was more for the masked, hmm. I know they have a lot more breaks though. At Club Buzz, the Buzz Lightyear had to perform 6 song and dance shows a day, then greet kids for about 30 mins afterwards. So basically, he gets a 10-15 min break every hour. Considering how hot it is inside, he deserved it. From what I heard, that was pretty standard as far as the characters go. Every hour or so they go out to the park and do some meet and greets, and depending on the situation, they might be in a show or something.

On another message board I frequent, someone started a thread about playing Captain Jack Sparrow at Disneyland (or world…can’t remember which one.) He basically said most of the people talking to him and getting their picture taken with him were 20-30 year old women, lots of whom would then suggest they go someplace private.

I have, myself, met KP and Ron…

Look about halfway down that page for a pic of my two girls with them. That was in 2007. When we went this June we were told she wasn’t around anymore and that the KP merchandise was pulled earlier in the year. Shame, really, if true. They have a great one there.

I have interacted with both face and non characters at Disney over the years. Notable events:

June, from Little Einsteins (exciting my at the time 3 year old)

Me: “Autograph for the kid?”
Her: Takes pen and signs
Me: “Nice to see that Kindergarten is paying off.”
Her: Flicking my nose

Earlier this year when meeting Belle I mentioned in her presence that she was French and she came back at me in French. Accented but pretty good. We conversed lightly and she shipped us off to Aurora in the same language.

And Tinkerbell swatted my ass at the Fairy meet-n-greet. I was distracted for hours.

You and my buddy both. He laughed for the rest of the damn day and for years afterward anytime it came up, he would start laughing.

Damn. I really thought she was Dale.

You have no idea. Chip was a wild little thing.

Ummm…wow. I can imagine. Must make it difficult to watch the movie with your kids!

I’ve known people that worked at both Disneyland and Disney World and they tell me Mickey is almost always played by a woman, because it’s hard to find a man small enough willing to do it.

But Mickey, as a character is too stuck up anyway. Now Goofy, he’s cool. When you go to Disney Mickey will be like “I’m too important to get my picture taken with you.” But not Goofy he’s not the least be camera shy.
