What did everyone think of Frozen? After so much hype it had I rented and thought it was awful, to me the plot was kind of loose and the characters dull. The songs didn’t even help it either. Not to mention the talking snow man was just tedious. I watched it through but it was an effort, opinions on frozen?

I enjoy a lot of other Disney films (which are meant to be for kids) and still watch them and at 22 I’m an adult. I just didn’t like Frozen and don’t understand the hype and wondered what others opinions where on it.

i will never, ever, ever understand this attitude when it comes to children’s media. why on earth should a movie aimed at the kid demographic not be of high quality? it takes just as much work to make a movie for children, and kids do understand and appreciate quality. the understanding develops and matures as they grow, but it is there. there’s tons of great G rated media out there, and there’s no reason for there not to be. meant for kids does not equal “excuse to be shitty”.

which Frozen is not, at all, by any means. the above being said, i think it does live up to the hype. i didn’t see it when it was first released, but i kept hearing about it, so i finally watched, and it is really quite good. i haven’t seen this kind of reaction to a Disney movie in a long time. everyone i know loves Frozen. my 3 year old niece loves it. my 63 year old mom loves it. several of my coworkers and i, all women ranging in age from mid twenties to mid thirties, all love it. we call each other’s extensions at random intervals and sing lines from the songs to each other. the “let it go” sequence is worth the price of admission all on its own- great song, stunning animation. it reminds me of the ballroom scene from Beauty and the Beast, the stampede scene from The Lion King, and the cave of wonders escape from Aladdin.

it excites me, because this may well kick off a new renaissance era for Disney. for the first time in a very long time, i’m looking forward to see what Disney comes out with next. i’m hoping this will be the “Little Mermaid”, in that it spawns even stronger films to follow it. time shall tell.

so yes, it’s safe to say that i liked it.

I don’t know, I adored Tangled and Wreck it Ralph a lot. I don’t really think Frozen was a huge step up in quality. Disney had a pretty weak period starting at about 2000, but by Princess and the Frog (or maybe Bolt, which I liked) they were back. Though honestly Princess and the Frog was pretty weak, IMO, despite having 3 of the best Disney characters between Lottie, Facilier, and Tiana, it was still a huge step up from Meet the Robinsons and Chicken Little.

This doesn’t mean I don’t like Frozen, I liked it a lot, but I don’t think it’s amazingly better than other recent Disney films.

I could not even finish it. A real stinker. I usually like kids’ movies but the CuteseyWootsey Factor on this one made my teeth hurt.

Wall-e, How to Train Your Dragon, Despicable Me … all great. Frozen … not a bit.

The snowman is a stupid attempt to make the scene more contemporary.

Hello **VeronicaVanity** , and welcome to the Straight Dope!

I agree that _Frozen_ didn’t seem particularly impressive. I really enjoyed _Princess and the Frog_ but most other “Disney Princess” movies seem pretty same-samey to me so far. _Frozen_ was like the rest: fun overall and quite cute in spots, but nothing to go crazy about.

In particular, I don’t understand why the song “Let It Go” would enthrall anybody but moody peri-adolescents longing to shut themselves in their room and listen to music and feel misunderstood.

Everyone seems to be in love with that song on the Internet and I also don’t understand what’s so special about it. I think it must be Idina Menzel.

And where the fuck did I say, or imply, that “for kids” means shitty? I was just making what I should have thought ought to be the obvious point that, in entertainment, “good for kids” does not, and should not, necessarily mean “good for adults”. Kiss and adults like different stuff, much of the time, and the most brilliant movie for kids may not please adults (and, very much, vice-versa).

Actually, I would think that the best possible movie for kids (young kids, anyway) is probably _not_ going to appeal much to adults. A large part of the problem with kids media these days, especially movies, is that the creators tend to spend way too much effort on inserting sly little jokes and references to please the parents, and hardly have any energy or time left over to create something that is going to be both appealing and worthwhile for the kids it is ostensibly aimed at.

I do not know if any of that applies to _Frozen_, as I haven’t seen it (no longer having kids young enough to be interested themselves), but, as a general rule of thumb, a kids’ movie (or book, or whatever) ought to have the primary aim of appealing to (and saying something meaningful to) kids, and, if it does so, it is good. If it can _also_ appeal to adults, _without sacrificing its appeal and meaning for kids_, then that is a bonus, but not one we adults really have any right to demand or expect.

I generally like animated movies like this but I found _Frozen_ to be pretty mediocre. It seemed to be just following the formula. Not bad but there was nothing that made it stand out.

It’s a perfect audio companion to the visually stunning ice palace scene. I don’t know that without those visuals, the song would have stood out all that well.

My kids are still of the age where we go see all these movies in the theater. I went into _Frozen_ not knowing much about it. I think they did a masterful job of marketing. The trailers were all about the snowman. Which meant we were able to take my girlfriend’s boys with us. If they knew it was a princess movie they would have refused to go. As it was we brought the 2 girls and 2 boys and they all enjoyed it. _Let it Go_ might be played out now but I had never heard it when I saw the movie at the time. As soon as I heard it I knew it was a hit. I had to immediately look up who sang it. Idina Menzel of course.
