DIY Computer Omnibus Thread. Builds. Upgrades. New Tech. Etc

Oh, sure. I was responding to the topic in general. I know that you personally have some extreme requirements that would be best solved with a 48" milled copper passive fin array

If only I had the ability to do something like that. Oh man, it would be glorious!

I was trying to figure out earlier today if the 14600 runs hotter or cooler than the 13600 but found conflicting answers. I’m not sure I could cool either while maintaining silence, even power limiting it to the minimum. But I definitely could not go higher. An xx700 would be right out, for example. If you have one of those, you’ll be able to hear it.

One issue for me is that the bequiet Dark Rock Pro is essentially obsolete for the LGA 1700 socket. I know noctua is releasing a new flagship air cooler next year (or possibly 2025) that will be better sized for the larger sockets, but I’m not entirely sure I want to go with noctua. Maybe chalk it up to the induced insanity, but I’ve become rather fond of bequiet. Sadly, I’ve heard nothing about bequiet working on a next-gen cooler.

My rig and setup:

Nice.

As an aside, I hated when Kleenex changed the pattern on their boxes this most recent time.

While you have inspired me to share a picture of my set up, no chance am I showing the inside of my rig, it’s due a cleaning and that will be future me’s problem, fuck that guy.

Here is my combo WFH and personal computing space. You can see my work laptop folded away after a day of earning the cheddar. The side table has been previously posted in the DIY thread in Cafe Society

Very nice! I particularly like the little floor shelf that the PC sits on.

Thanks! One of the benefits of owning a welder, immovable shelving

Is your decor Akalabeth?

The wall mural (and the matching snake poster) are from Dungeons of Daggorath, an old Colour computer game from my youth.

The poster artwork are gifts from my daughter who makes cool art based on funny moments that I have related from gaming, like the Imp tearing off my arm to beat me to death (Doom 2016)

As I mentioned upthread, I’m looking to purchase a new desktop. I ran across this HP today:

HP Slim Desktop High Performance Business Computer, Intel Pentium Silver J5040 (up to 3.2GHz), 16 GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB PCIe SSD + 1TB HDD, Intel UHD Graphics 605, Windows 11 GM Accessory

I’m certain that the specs will be more than sufficient for my needs, particularly the 16 GB of RAM. I am curious, however, as to why it has two hard drives? One for the OS and apps, and the other for data? Can anybody explain this to me?

Not sure to the why, but on my machine, if I am doing any recording like using OBS or GeForce experience to capture game play, I store it on a spinner driver to avoid premature aging of my SSDs. Is it a real issue, i don’t know, but I have a spinner in my machine so that’s what I use it for.

Because HDD (physical platter) is cheaper than an SSD so it’s a way to cut costs while still offering 2TB total storage on the machine. They’ll put the OS on the SSD so it runs faster and having an HDD isn’t a bad thing assuming you’re using it for file storage (photos, music, Office files, etc) and not trying to run games or intensive programs off of it. It’s a 7200 speed HDD so it’s not low end; if they were really trying to go cheap, it’d be a 5400 speed.

Thanks for the replies. Can I also assume, then, that the SSD is the C: drive and the HDD will be the D: drive? Will 3rd-party apps automatically install to the SSD? Will the ‘User’ files automatically be placed on the HDD?

I feel like this means it will be non-standard dimensions, and thus would be a pain in the ass to upgrade.

How much is it? At $100 it’s a steal but at $1000 it’s a rip-off.

$469.99 on Amazon.

And I will not be performing any upgrades. Ever.

And no gaming, just workstation use?

Yes, almost certainly
Yes, unless you tell them to install elsewhere, C: is the default
No, not unless you set that as your save location in the program

While I can’t 100% guarantee that the SSD will be the C: drive with the OS on it, it would be pretty baffling for them to include an SSD and NOT have it be the C: drive.

Correct. Office apps (mostly Excel), photo and music storage, Quicken, and a whole lot of meaningless browsing (except for the Dope, of course.)

The only thing I don’t like is that CPU. From what I can gather, it’s a budget CPU from 4 years ago. Something like a 12100 would blow it out of the water at half the price. But you’re not looking to build your own. Let me poke around and see if I can find any $500 pre-builts that are significantly better.

Are you specifically looking for a smaller size case? Or did that one just happen to be a slim?

So, if my documents, plus my music and pictures (the bulk of my data) automatically get placed on the C: drive, under \users\Railer13, what will the HDD be used for?
