In the musical _Les Miserables_ when Javert sings _M’sieur le Maire’, You’ll wear a different chain_ he Is implying that Valjesn will exchange his chain of office for convict’s chains. Not sure if that means that mayors in France at one time wore chains of office or if it was poetic license. ---

I too misread the title as “Do all English majors wear this golden necklace-looking thing?” and thought, well, that’s one way to combat falling enrollments in the arts and humanities. Sadly, we will need other methods. ---
