Elementary, junior high, and senior high school in Cleveland, Ohio …

We recited The Pledge of Allegiance at the start of every school day.

We had a classmate in high school that was of the Jehovah Witness faith.

Jehovah Witnesses do not believe in pledging to a flag.

So, the school worked out an agreement that our classmate could excuse themselves during the reciting of The Pledge of Allegiance.

_The Jehovah’s Witness Employee’s beliefs that the American Flag is a “false idol”, and that saluting the Flag or reciting the Pledge are acts of "worship.”_

ETA
I can remember saying the Pledge of Allegiance in elementary school up until the 4th grade, which would have been about '68 or '69. After that, IIRC it was recited over the PA system until '77 or '78.

I guess you were surrounded by the cymbols of Statehood.

As an Aussie who attended a couple of American schools as a third-grader in 1980 I recall that every morning we had to sing one of a few patriotic American songs (eg the US national anthem and the “From sea to shining sea” song, I think there was at least one more), and pledge allegiance to the US flag. Every day.

I remember getting in trouble from the teacher for mouthing the words. She was very unhappy with me. So after that I just sang along, even though it wasn’t my country and I found the whole thing quite bizarre.

In 1987 I again lived in the US, this time as a high school sophomore, at a religious military school. Each day was started of with that prayer that starts with “Our Father, hallowed be thy name…”. I didn’t believe in that stuff, either. But I just went along with it again, even though I still found it incredibly odd.

My school doesn’t. There’s no classroom I’ve seen with the Bear Flag in it,

Well Virginia’s flag has a king on it. Of course, he’s just been killed by a topless woman.
