I don’t quite agree with the OP. The average person (I’d say the average person almost worldwide since American television and film are imported by nearly every other country) knows more names and symbols of Judaism than our small numbers would imply. But, they rarely have an idea what those names and symbols mean. There’s an episode of Seinfeld where passengers on an airplane discuss what kosher means. None of them gets it right. Peter Griffin of Family Guy knows Jews don’t eat pigs but has no other knowledge of kashrut.
Okay, but even still, that’s a 2 to 1 hillbilly ratio.
