I just now got an e-mail from a friend telling me that my new book on Kay Kendall got a _double-page spread_ in today’s paper! I am, needless to say, giddy as a wee schoolgirl about this. Can anyone confirm? The book part, not me being like a wee giddy schoolgirl . . .

Don’t have one to hand, but if this is true well done! The Mail is the second highest circulation daily paper in the UK, currently selling just under 2.5 million. That’s great publicity!

We get it over in IOreland aswell. I have to go to the shop for some fags so I’ll have a look while I’m there.

It’s a double page spread all right, Eve, but it’s not a review as such. Someone has been through the book and filletted out all the juicy bits and just reproduced them in a kind of “tell all about Kay Kendall” spread. I hope they got your permission for this. I don’t know enough about the publishing world to know if this is the usual practice.

Thanks, **Sparrow** —I don’t care if they got permission or not, it’s _great_ publicity! It does mention my book’s title and all, yes? With helpful hints on where to buy it? In that case, _woo-hoo!_ Between this and the London _Times_, everyone from Glasgow to Oxford should be clued-in about this.

**Yojimbo** , you can buy those at _stores?_ [blushes prettily]

It’s called “second serial rights.” (“First serial rights” are for excerpt publication in advance of the bound-book date.) They damn well BETTER have gotten permission from **Eve** ’s publisher, and coughed up a few bucks as well, a percentage of which should filter down to **Eve** ’s own pocketbook.

Congratulations, **Eve**!

At the end of the article there’s a paragraph which says “Abridged from The Brief Madcap Life of Kay Kendall, by Eve Golden with Kim Kendall, published by The University Press of Kentucky, £19.95”. Nothing about where you can buy it though. The article was written by someone called Glenys Roberts, I’m afraid I don’t know anything about her.

BTW all I remember about Kay Kendall is that wonderful line in Genevieve: “I’ll show them how to play the plumpet!”

We do indeed **Eve**. I like putting them in my mouth after I get them all warm and giving them a small but good suck.

Couldn’t find a copy of the Mail but it was a small newsagent. I’ll have a look in a better one on the way home. I can scan the pages if I find the paper and you can get a copy.

I’ll let ya know tomorrow.

Dont suppose you have a fax number, Eve? If so I could fax a copy over to you right now.

Thanks, **Sparrow** , I am hunting down a copy on this end—the International Newstand across the street should have one by lunchtime, and someone in the office thinks her boss may have it, too. I hope _Mail_ readers are on the ball enough to just ask their local booksellers or go online to buy it . . . Hope they dished the dirtiest parts, to pique peoples’ interest!

I will ask my publishers if we got a few quid from the _Mail_, **Ike** , thanks for the heads-up.

Readers of the _Daily Mail_ are, unfortunately, not known for their independence of thought…

. . . And so will the _Mail_, sez the newsstand. They’ll have the Monday issue Tuesday. That will give me a reason to look forward to coming to work, for once!

_Ha!_ I only tell you the _good_ parts! Just ask some of my friends, who I whine on the phone to about my weight and my lack of any love life and my miserable brain-deadening job where they totally waste my abilities and how I don’t actually make any _money_ on my books and . . . What were we talking about again?

Picked up yesterday’s Daily Mail at the Internatinal newsstand this morning. Really funny: they excerpted every dirty, sexy part they could find (and still managed to get half-a-dozen facts wrong)! I’m not sure Kay’s sister will like the headline, “BLIGHTED BY SEXUAL EXCESS,” but it should sell a few copies. The subhead notes that she was “found dead at the age of 32,” like they came across her body stuffed in a Dumpster. Ha! Well, “there is no bad press,” so I am delighted with this. Now to find out if they actually paid my published for the subrights . . …
