For that matter, how do you count pages of an ebook (well, one that doesn’t have page numbers)? Or for a book that comes in different editions with different page sizes?
And THAT’S why I gave up on listening to Librovox Recordings (books read by amateurs).
In terms of immersiveness, nothing beats an excellent match between the reader and the protagonist.
I adore listening to George Guidell’s curmudgeonliness while “playing” Jim Qwilleran in the "Cat Who…" series of books.
But I picked up a dead-tree version of one and realized “These are just too lightweight for me”… without George.
Oh, and you’ve got to hear Keith Szarabajka as Christopher Snow in “Fear Nothing” and “Seize The Night”. His breathy spookines matches Christopher’s prowling his hometown at night with his dog (due to an inability to go outside in daylight).
