Here in Ohio students are not generally exempt. I got called twice when I was in college, and had to show up the first time despite being at school over 60 miles away. The second time I was excused because it was finals week. The third time I was called I was living in Virginia, which kind of disqualified me. Then I got called twice by Virginia, only serving on a jury once. And finally I served on the county Grand Jury here in Ohio a couple of years ago. That was a lot of fun. Except for the really sick cases.
In Mass, you can put it off for up to a year, without being challenged on it, so you can just schedule it for when you have class. Plus, it’s a one trial/one day system: you either get on a panel, or you only have to come in for one day, whichever is more.
I’d love to get on another jury. It was probably the most interesting 2 days I’ve had in a long time, and I met a cute girl, AND the defendant’s story was just laughable, so it was pretty entertaining to watch.
