Please…we at the _Straight Dope_ only use the proper and scientific terms for genital organs, not locker room and bordello slang. So let’s rephrase the question: \*\* Do dolphins have tallywhackers? \*\* (read in Jacques Cousteau accent) A prehensile penis would come in very handy (ahem) if you were an aquatic creature with no arms. I’m sure that dolphins, being the astute creatures they are, probably have a good chuckle whenever they see the human male skinnydip in their presence (most often in pairs along the outer shores of Key West). I seem to remember an actress that was in _Cocoon_, (Tahnee Welch?) My memory of this film is mercifully vague… Where was I? I’ve heard that if you go out whale watching that it is possible to see the males surfacing with a hardon. Flapping the water and/or jumping out of water is part of the mating and so they are likely to be ready for action. ---

As for the OP, as I understood it, male bottle-nosed dolphins peni are somewhat like a switchblade, and kept inside their bodies for protective reasons until needed. I had read that some species of birds were similar, such as some species of ducks among others. I am pretty sure the author I read that from was Desmond Morris. ---

Parrots don’t have penises. They basically just press close to one another and let it splatter around. There may be some external cloacal shaping that assists in this but there’s no penis. The birds that do have penises keep them inside the body when not in use, but this is true of many mammals as well. How often do you see a kangaroo’s or even a cat’s penis?
