I just read this – supposedly it’s traditional outside the USA.

Does this really happen somewhere, or is someone pulling my peep?

“On Easter Monday everyone gets up early; boys and men to set off on a whipping trip through the village, girls and women to prepare, hide, or run away. Boys stop at people’s homes and whip the legs of every girl and woman who lives in the house. They sometimes catch the girl still in bed. Little boys say an Easter 2004 carol while whipping, usually asking for an egg or two. A popular custom is also to grab the girl and throw her in cold water, the ‘Easter dousing’. The whipping and dousing is supposed to chase away bad spirits and illness, so this is actually good for the girl!”

Oh, you better not pout,
You better not cry,
You better watch out,
I’m telling you why,
Easter Bunny’s coming, to town.

He knows if you’ve been whipping,
The girls on their bare legs,
If not he won’t be tipping,
A basket of Easter eggs.

I have never heard this anywhere. Where did you read it? Which countries were said to have this tradition?

**GrandfatherMoon** , I belive the holiday you’re looking for is **Dyngus Day** , celebrated by Polish-Americans the Monday after Easter Sunday:

> [@](#):
>
> It was traditionally the day when boys tried to drench girls with squirt guns or buckets of water. “Smigus” comes from the word _smigac_ meaning _swish with a cane_ since men tap the ankles and legs of the girls. _Dyngus_ comes probably from German word _dingen_ which means _to come to an agreement_ since the girls needed to give men money to stop being swish and splash. The more a girl is sprayed with water, the higher are her chances to get married.

More information is available [here](http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art758.asp).

The SDMB celebrated Dyngus Day in [this thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=250496).

[sub]This is the second question I’ve answered in as many weeks. After all those months of mindless/pointless sex threads, I may finally be earning my keep here![/sub]

TWIAVBP\*, but I’ve never, ever heard of this.

However, I’ve never been to [the Czech Republic.](http://www.radio.cz/en/current/talking)

> Pomlazka
> One prime example of a pagan Czech Easter celebration is the “pomlazka”. Farmers used to believe that a strong whipping after the winter period guaranteed health, prosperity, and most importantly a good harvest. This tradition remains to this day, although slightly modified. It is only the women who are given a good spanking with whips made of willow twigs, decorated with colourful ribbons (as if a little bit of decoration would help to ease the pain!). It is mainly younger boys who go from door to door, hoping to thrash a few girls to get some eggs in return, while singing traditional Easter carols.

I found the same text (with the apparent “2004” typo) on [this site](http://www.easter-2004.com). It seems a very straightforward info site, tho I can’t tell who sponsors it.

Whipping the girls, dousing them, making them pay to stop… yeah, that beats the hell outta chocolate rabbits any day! For shingus my dingus!
