So, a bear wanders into a campsite and snatched a families cooler. The Dad, a former Marine, threw a log at the bear when it started charging his 6 year old son after the kid threw a shovel. He killed the bear. [By throwing a log at it.](http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19374624/) A log. He threw a log at the bear. And killed it. He also got a ticket for not securing his campsite properly. I thought the guy needed to teach the kid basic rules of camping. You don’t irratate a bear by hitting it with a shovel, then daddy has to save your ass. The kid was smiling away, no clue how close he came to killing himself. ---

[/QUOTE] Yeah, obviously once junior threw the shovel the dad had to do something (letting him get eaten would probably upset the mother and its value in teaching the kid a lesson would be questionable)–but I hope he explained to his son that throwing a shovel at a wild bear is one of the _dumbest things you can do_ when it hasn’t acted aggressively towards you and is in fact leaving your area. ---

There was a bear in a tree, and some rowdy kids were walking around unsupervised. I didn’t point out the bear, because I figured they’d do something stupid. ---

There was a guy near here that killed a rabid bobcat last week with his bear (sic) hands. Ok, he strangled it while it was attacking him. A lot, lot smaller than a bear, but still pretty macho and he might have saved others from a similar attack. ---
