> I wrote a screenplay in which the noise the drunk guy heard in the woods was “probably just a pink elephant”–and not one of the twenty-ish stars had any idea what that meant. Hard to believe an image that pervasive would vanish away in just a few decades.

The only reason I know about this is that there used to be a comic strip called _Lolly_, which included an alcoholic character who regularly hallucinated pink elephants. This was considered funny at the time. (Most of the humor in _Lolly_ involved sexual harassment or alcoholism.) Other than that, I can’t remember the last time I saw a pink elephant reference–until now.

“Bricking it” is very common in the UK, same meaning (i.e. scared enough to poo).

I’ve never heard of “packin’ it” and I was born in the '60s. Then again, I spent a good portion of my youth outside the US, so maybe that has something to do with it.

My ‘do people still say…’ is the word jamoke, meaning a goofball, a loser, or kind of a joker. Anyone heard of it? Anyone still use it? I haven’t heard it since the '70s.

Are you sure it wasn’t “packing fudge?”

I’ve never heard it, and I was in my teens in the late '60s.

Oh my God, yes. I don’t even consider it retro. I hear it a lot.

Now, if you were to refer to an authority figure as The Man . . . _that_ would be retro.

I’ve heard it rarely, may have used it once in my life, though I favour the comparable term “chucklehead”.

None of them has seen _Dumbo_? If my kids (16-19)) got the reference (and they’re not around to ask right now) - that’s probably where they’d have known it from.

According to the OP’s clarification, it means the opposite - constipated due to fear. Which is something I’ve never heard of until now. Being scared enough to crap yourself as you said, of course, but…

I’m older than your kids - I’m in my 20s (23) - but Dumbo’s where I know it from.
