What flavor is Mountain Dew? It’s marketed as an alternative to Sprite and 7-Up, but it sure isn’t lemon-lime? Could it be lemon-orange? I believe one of the ingredients is concentrated orange juice…

I seem to associate Mountain Dew with grapefruit juice. Perhaps that’s the flavor you’re looking for.

It contains concentrated orange juice according to the label.

Here’s a fun fact. In Japan the orange concentrate is replaced with _tangerine_ concentrate.

Oh yeah, and apparently Canadian Mountain Dew has no caffeine.

There are way too many people with Mountain Dew sites. For example:

Personally, I prefer Sprite to Dew, and if I’m at a place that only serves Pepsi products, I always try to get a lemon-lime Slice whenever possible. Unfortunatlely, since it’s treated as an alternative to Sprite even though it’s a different flavor. Still, Mountain Dew isn’t that bad, it’s just that I think lemon-lime soda tastes better.

I don’t understand the concept of Mountain Dew without caffeine. Don’t get me wrong, I like the flavor, but mainly I drink the stuff when 1) I need to wake up, or 2) I sense an impending headache from caffeine withdrawal. It’s convenient because it’s sold in the office vending machine, as neither Jolt nor Water Joe are.

(I’ve also been known to drink coffee, but only 50/50 with milk. My company has only that powdered creamer crap; I’m sure this is why they have such a high turnover among programmers.)

As an Canadian friend described it, it’s illegal to artifically add caffine to a product in Canada, so there’s your no-caffine Dew.

Insert your own anti-Canada joke here, 'cause I’m not getting flamed for it.

There’s a weird law in this country that says that colas may contain caffeine, but other softdrinks may not.

It wasn’t always that way - I remember Mountain Dew used to contain more caffeine than other brands&flavours, but now it doesn’t have any.

I vaguely remember there being some kind of media fuss about caffeine in soft drinks back in the early 70’s. That’s probably when the law came in.

Getting a little off the topic, Yellow 5 is one of the ingredients in Mountain Dew and people tell me it reduces sperm count. How exactly does that work? Does it shrink the testicles, derange the sperm… what?

**BugZap** , you needn’t bother trying to make me a coffee convert; I just don’t particularly like the taste of the stuff. It’s not bad as a flavoring in something else, so if I’m in the mood, I literally drink milk & sugar with a little coffee mixed in.

And when you say I’m only on “half doses”, I hope you’re talking about coffee, and not caffeine in general. I drink a _lot_ of caffeine. When I was in high school and too young to buy alcohol, my friends and I would get our kicks from liter bottles of Jolt. (That’s a liter at a time, each.) My tolerance is now high enough that I can drink almost a six-pack of Dew and go straight to bed. My dependency is now so strong that going more than 36 hours without a fix results in a blinding headache from withdrawal. (It used to be about 20 hours, but I’ve been cutting down.)

I have a picture of the caffeine molecule on the wall next to my PC. The caption says “The Breakfast Of Champions.”

All of which brings me to another question. Does long-term caffeine consumption do any harm to the body? I know that more than a certain dose can be fatal-- on occasion I’ve gotten heart palpitations during a long all-nighter-- but I’m more interested in any little hurts that build up over time.
(Alcohol causes cirrhosis; smoking causes cancer; if my own major vice is fixing to kill me, I might like to know about it. =B^)

Well, I was just told by my doctor (last Monday) that my caffeine intake is causing irregular heartbeat; the palpitations you mention. He has told me to cut way back and said it could lead to heart problems later on.
