When we stayed in a rented apartment in Turkey; back in the 90s, paper for the Western type toilets was provided, but there was a stern notice (and we were given a verbal warning) to on no account try to flush it as the system was not designed to cope with paper. There was a bin with a lid for used paper. There was also a small pipe leading under the seat and a tap to allow it to squirt water for washing. This was much better than using the rough paper that was all that was available. When we were away from the apartment, the only public conveniences were in Mosques. They were all pretty shabby, but kept scrupulously clean. They were all squatters and there was no paper, just the usual water pipe. ---

Spent several months traveling in India in the early 80’s. Used the left hand/ water method and never got sick. ---
