# Do the US Marines really have dress uniforms for bulldogs?

In [this picture](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:PlateVIII_Blue_White_and_Drum_Corps.jpg) on Wikipedia there are some Marines in ceremonial uniforms, accompanied by a bulldog wearing a dog version of same uniforms. With the insignia of a Corporal, no less, which would mean that the dog would outrank two of the human Marines in that illustration. Is this some kind of joke on the part of the artist? Do the Marines really have uniforms for dogs?

Not a joke, but an unofficial [mascot](http://www.usmcpress.com/heritage/marine_corps_mascot.htm) who is kinda-sorta considered on active duty. The current English Bulldog’s name is [Hummer](http://dogs.thefuntimesguide.com/2007/02/dog_mascot_for_the_marines.php) and is only ranked PFC. His predecessor was named [Mac](http://www.usmc.mil/marinelink/mcn2000.nsf/main5/0ACA96485200C0D6852571730057FE68?opendocument) and was ranked Lance Corporal. One mascot in the 20’s reached Sgt. Major.
