I’m getting pretty tired of my brother’s parrots screaming their heads off because someone parked a truck across the street two doors down and- gasp!- _ **strangers** _ are walking around outside! They’re the bird equivalent of a watchdog who is useless because it barks at squirrels, birds, and windblown leaves as well as intruders. ---

yes, pretty much. Parrots are intelligent and LOUD and people shouldn’t have them as pets if that is going to be a problem. I thought I was quoting Coach, there but messed up. anyway, a lot of cruelty happens to parrots because people don’t understand them and their needs and it makes me angry. ---

Parrots (Psittaciformes) are highly intelligent and social birds who have an instinctive need to be alert and communicate. The birds are just doing what they are evolved to do, and this is one of many reasons that they should not be kept as house pets or by people who do not have the appropriate facilities or experience to keep them (notwithstanding what trapping for the pet trade has done to devastate natural populations). Shock collars are a terrible device even for dog training, where they can produce adverse behavioral responses that are difficult for even a good trainer to fix, and they are absolutely terrible for the purpose of trying to repress instinctual behavior. While having lived around feral parrot flocks I can sympathize with how aggravating and even distressing the noise is, putting one on a parrot for “screaming their heads off” would be the height of cruelty. Yeah. I know. But animal anti-cruelty peeps get outraged easily. I knew(I actually knew the guy, Vietnam vet, business owner, family man) a person who put poison in hamburger meat allover a little village. Killed numerous pets. Dead dogs, cats, wild squirrels, raccoons and rats were everywhere. Til a kid got sick from high dose of rat poison, it was just some crazy guy who hated dogs. Then it turned into attempted murder. His reason: dogs are dirty and pooped on his lawn. He spent a few nice years as a guest of the state. You just never know when someone will snap. ---

If the parrots are bothering you, move to a mobile home park which has countless peafowl running around, unrestrained. All the peacocks are vying for attention of the peahens. Yes, peacocks spreading their tails are beautiful. But their main courting behavior is screaming. And peafowl poop all over the place is revolting. ~VOW ---

Or live near a person with Guinea fowl. Possibly the stupidest bird on the planet. An airplane could crash and they wouldn’t move. A butterfly flits by and it’s chaotic screeching for 30 minutes. Running in all directions. More than 3 or 4 and it’s loud. Mostly folks get the chicks, they think are just so cute. Then the neighbors start complaining and they haul them down my road and dump them. I call them Hobo chickens. I’ve had many reside here over the years. Eating twice their weight in feed. And doing nothing for it. If…big if they lay an egg it’s hidden. (Not that I want them). They never hatch because even Mom forgot where she laid it. So dumb. ---
