I like chess, but I never joined the chess club because I felt like it would ruin it to learn programmatic openings and defenses. To this day, I play just by feel, and I agree with Bobby Fischer that it would be a better game if the opening positions were randomized every time to make players think on their feet. I was on the Knowledge Bowl team, though, and we came in fourth in the state. Oh boy! \*\* The thing about chess is that the openings have to be seen as setting up the troops before a battle in the Napoleonic age and earlier. People that think that openings should not be studied are like armies were the commander never learns about the proper time one should dig defenses (Castle), your troops are going to have a very bad time. So where is the fun? It comes when after the opening, during the middle game and the ending, when the position allows us to do great combinations or attacks that the early planning allowed us to reach. . . \*\* former tournament player in the SF bay Area and Modesto here. ---

Then why not just set up the opening positions as they are at the point when you have got the opening formularies out of the way? ETA: And just to be clear, I’m not in any way suggesting that without studying openings and defenses, I can be as good as I would be if I had, or that I would not be at a severe disadvantage against most players who have. I am sure I would get a pretty crappy rating in competitive play. BTW, I similarly think the way serious players play Scrabble is dumb. It should be about commonly used words (at least commonly among highly educated people), not obscure technical or archaic ones.
