I wasn’t intending to be witty, only to highlight how tired and hackneyed your punchline was. Seriously, are you holding up “If you think we hesitate to pick on people with obvious mental problems, how do you explain this thread?” as an example of a clever witty riposte? The structure of that “joke”, if we can even still call it that, is so old and tired the [2,000 year old man](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000_Year_Old_Man) would have rolled his eyes at how hacky it is. I mean, c’mon: it’s little more than a slightly dressed-up “I know you are, but what am I?” Borrring. ---

Clearly you live in a binary world - not desperately chasing others for validation is not the same thing as humility. “Not needy” is not a synonym for “humble”. And it’s entirely possible to loathe and pity someone at the same time. And be amused by their rhetorical flailings, too. I loathe you because you’re a racist, misogynist transphobe. I pity you because you’re also clearly mentally challenged in some way - not in any way that would excuse the racism and misogyny and transphobia, mind you. And I laugh at you because your obviously misplaced pride in your average translation skill is funny. Why would I _pretend_ to pity you? That would only be the case if I were trying to cover up the loathing. But I freely admit to both, so what’s my motivation? Naah, mate, you need to live up to the sad fact that you are truly pathetic, independent of your hatefulness. ---

Funny, @ASL_v2.0 sneers that my observation about **Dibble** is trivially obvious; **Dibble** insists it’s untrue. Performative pity is a clumsy way to be contemptuous, a feeble attempt to make the object of the alleged pity feel “less than”, since people would generally feel better about being hated and feared (the fear implying power) than being hated and seen as pathetic and pitiable, which acts as a strike against one’s honor. So since this psychological dynamic is so well known, it’s a standard move in online discourse to attempt to leverage it as you did here. But it’s _so_ standard, anyone with a modicum of sophistication can see right through it. Hard to believe you don’t understand something so basic. But unlike with the fake pity, it’s also hard to see the point of pretending _not_ to understand it. Sometimes you’re just weird. 🤷‍♂️ ---

**Dibble** , it just occurred to me what’s likely behind this driving need to insist you pity me. Years ago now, I described my progressive racial politics (support for international development aid, reparations for slavery, public housing, increased funding of antipoverty social programs, etc.) in terms of a kind of pity for hapless sub-Saharan Africans, who never shook off colonialism and made their own way as South Asians or East Asians did. This was well before I had any inkling of your own sub-Saharan African heritage (in fact, I assumed that I was talking to a white audience or I might have kept that under wraps), so it’s not possible to charge that I was saying this just to “get your goat”. So now you have made it your zealous mission to flip the script and insist that _you_ are the one who should pity _me_. Can’t blame you, really. That’s a bitter pill to swallow. ---

No, he probably pities you for the same reason I do. The notion that internet strangers would be convinced that you’re smart because of a video of a piece of paper with a high test score is just too pathetic to contemplate. It’s hard to fathom that an adult human, of sound mind, could consider that such a silly stunt would be seen as anything other than ridiculous. It is truly pathetic indeed. Pitiable, in fact. ---
