At some point in the very distant future, the Sun’s energy output will have increased so much that Earth will become uninhabitable by any life form. Billions of years after that again, the Sun will turn into a red giant and either swallow up the Earth or scorch it beyond recognition, depending on whose calculations turn out to be correct. And after _that,_ the Sun will become a white dwarf and then quietly, unceremoniously, run out of fuel and die, and if Earth still exists it will be abandoned to the interstellar void. So the world won’t last forever. But it’s not going to end next Saturday, either. ---

Nobody ever stopped hitler in the beginning from what he was doing. Not to mention he taught our world not to ever do this mistake ever again! So honestly, i do not believe in HELL! or the devil i truly believe that men made up the devil because they were once power hungry. (actually they still are!) ---

I like the SubGenius explanation for why they got their date wrong - when the flying saucers failed to arrive on X Day (July 5, 1998), they explained that they had the date upside down, and the end of the world was postponed until 8661. ---

5 or 6 billion years from now the sun will run out of fuel and become a red giant. It will engulf Earth (or close enough) and either vaporize it or turn it into an inert cinder. By that time there probably won’t be any humans left to judge. ---

I’d love to hear from any of the 12 respondents who think we’re finished on Saturday. I suspect most of these are “just in case” votes. By the way, does anyone know whether not believing the May 21 date as Judgment Day automatically disqualifies you for heaven. It’s possible that one may not believe the date, but could be a good-standing Christian in ever other way, right? Jesus: “So you say you’re a believer, huh? Then why did you vote ‘No’ in JJ’s poll?” ---

Why is there such fascination with the end of the world? I admit I’m one of the worst offenders. _The Stand, Lucifer’s Hammer, Armegeddon, Deep Impact, I Am Legend, Dawn of the Dead, At the Mouth of Madness, Alas Babylon_, even \*Left Behind \*… well, pretty much any apocalyptic or post apocalyptic novel or film, no matter how crappy it is. Any time you want to destroy the earth, I’m there, baby. And obviously a lot of other people feel this way. Shucks, apocalypse and post-apocalypse fiction is practically an entire genre all by itself. Is it misanthropy? Do we just like scaring ourselves, much the same way we scare ourselves with horror fiction and movies? If, as Thoreau said, the masses of men lead lives of quiet desperation, are such visions a relief or escape from that desperation? What? ---

Folks, there’s only one /e/ in Judgment unless you also think there’s a /u/ in Color. So knock it off. There’s no faster way to end up in Hell, I guarantee you that. But I’d just like to reiterate my prediction that come May 22, Camping is going to say that the rapture did, in fact, happen. Then he’ll say “Hurry up and donate to me so you’re saved in time for the end of the world in a few months.” In other words, I’m going with square 4-4 on [the bingo card](http://funnygurusdca.livejournal.com/1710671.html). ---

Isn’t it the contention of the May 21 crowd that Judgment only begins on that date? That leaves a giant loophole for prognosticators. Surely they can find portents aplenty to keep the delusion rolling along for quite awhile, at least until we forget the original prediction. ---
