No, the point is that some people DO use it to telegraph racist insult. Thus the only way to not come across as one of them is to stop using the phrase. I had never seen it used that way until I saw the clip above. I would still encourage folks hearing the phrase not to take it as proof of racism. That said, I also intend to try never to use it again myself. Which really will be hard and I hope I don’t slip up and offend someone, because I know what it’s like to have to walk away wondering if somebody meant what I think they meant. . .
I think that’s reasonable. I didn’t (and still don’t) consider the phrase to be racist but if some POC are offended by it, that’s good enough reason for me to not use it. But before the brouhaha caused by the announcer in the OP, it never would have occurred to me that some people might consider it racist. I believe that Brian Davis (the announcer) was probably in the same boat and should not have been fired for a one time utterance.
