Oftentimes IRL I only see one facet of a person’s personality. Because of that, it’s easier for me to think of online people as real people. I think I have a more rounded view of the (few) folks on my LJ list and the ones in the SDMB community because I see more of their lives. I think I also have a more rounded view of those who post in a lot of forums instead of just one or two. At the same time, being rather anti-social, I don’t have any real desire to meet any dopers IRL (except for **Ryan\_Liam** maybe ;)). I’ve been to a DC Lunch Bunch, but I didn’t really know any of the people there, so it was sorta odd, and then my school schedule didn’t let me go anymore. Yeah, this is rambling a lot. I think I’ll stop now. ---

I am new to this but I think about different people or things they said after I turn off my computer and go home at night. **Sauron** and I will talk about interesting things that grabbed our attention on the boards during the day or he will tell me about someone disagreeing with him and how he went on and on and on trying to get them to see his point. (He’s bad about this sometimes… 😉 ) And I’ll wonder aloud to him how someone is doing if they have posted about a problem going on recently or if I haven’t seen them post in a while. I would love to meet some people IRL if the opportunity arose. That’s the one thing I hate is not having People Pages to know what people look like. I like being able to put a face with all these opinions. 🙂 ---

I remember facts about the people here (like certain people are gay, or they like certain kinds of food)… and sometimes I’ll remember who posted what. (especially if it relates to me… I’m not being egotistical, as I think that everyone remembers things posted about them) I think of some of the people on here as my friends… passing greetings in threads, emails, IM’ing, even meeting a few of them. (and I’d like to meet more of you, if the chance comes) My parents and siblings don’t really understand it when I refer to my “online friends.” In fact, my brother once told me about his MSN list: “Yeah, I have 120 people on it… and I know them all, unlike **your** MSN list…” Eh, shut up… > [@](#): > > I barely even think of any of you as human. I never think of the people on these boards as anything BUT people! I’ve so many nice interactions with so many of them. Just this week my children have been receiving postcards from Dopers who care enough to brighten a kid’s day with some mail. With interesting facts attached! I’ve gotten chocolate in the mail from Dopers, Valentine’s Day cards, books. I’ve even met some in person, and they all were just as terrific as I knew they’d be. “Online” is not some separate thing, full of made-up people. I’m a real person, and I’m here. I believe everyone else here is too! ---

I’d say that I think of all of you as real people, Hell, I’ve even met a bunch of you to prove it! I tend to remember certain things about certain Dopers, some of those things have already been pointed out, so I won’t give any sort of long list (sorry to those of you doing vanity searches…you know who you are!) I’m actually very suprised when someone remembers just about anything at all about me, such as my status in life (engineering studenbt), where I go to school/live, my relative age, or Hell even my username! It doesn’t strike me as odd that I remember things about others, but it does striek me as odd that they remember things about me… ---

Meeting Dopers IRL ruined this place for me, but I was heading that way, anyway. Before I met some I could, like Muad, avoid thinking about people here as real, with all the negatives one cares to associate with depersonalization. Now even the ones I’m not likely to ever meet have this annoying air of reality about them and I have to play nice. ---

I remember Airman, and Guin, and StephenG, and Davebear, and Robot Arm, and Wicked Blue, and Porcupine, and Erislover. Half of them I’ve met in person, so it makes it easierto have a face to put with the name Yay. Go me. ---

I am fairly new here, so that probably affects my view on this issue the most. Up to this point, I don’t really associate any of you with a personality. I remember a lot of screen names, but only attach a certain personality to a few of them. I am sure with time that I will build more of a “relationship” with some of the posters on this site. I am fairly new here, so that probably affects my view on this issue the most. Up to this point, I don’t really associate any of you with a personality. I remember a lot of screen names, but only attach a certain personality to a few of them. I am sure with time that I will build more of a “relationship” with some of the posters on this site. I hope so! As a side note: I was wondering when it is appropriate to private message someone, or e-mail them. Is it assumed that if they have enabled these features that it is o.k.? I would appreciate any advice from you vet’s out there. ---

You weirdo, Maud’Dib! Not only do I think of everyone here as a person… I even make little paper dolls for everyone and read the threads out loud in different voices, holding the paper dolls up and having them act out the posts. The mods have little attachable frownie eyebrows for when they are scolding people. I made a diorama of auntie em’s office, pulled out my old Barbie’s to play the part of the Scylla’s Nubians, and am currently making party hats for hillbilly queen and MsRobyn’s b’day celebration. Yep, yep. That Maud’Dib… one weird cat. ---

I thought some more about it, and I think that a good metaphor is that I think of many of the people here as I would a character in an RPG game. Yes, I may remember some details about certain posters (didja know that **Airman** is in the military and that **Esprix** is _gay_! :eek: ), but I still seem to only concieve as all of them as artificial characters. I don’t know why. Maybe it is just the ADD talking, but each thread is like a whole new virgin posting, and I have dificulty remembering anyone outside of the context of a single thread. If that same poster posts in another thread, it is as if they are a clean slate.
