Do you ever feel sad when leaving a town or city you are visiting?

Best guess: Santa Barbara. Try that one.

I don’t enjoy cities. Or towns for that matter. If I have been sad to leave them it is only for the friends I leave behind.

But there are natural places I have been sad to leave. Saskatchewan prairie land. John Muir Wilderness in the Sierra Nevada. The east coast of Cape Breton Island. The high desert of New Mexico.

Very much this.

I am always sad to leave New Orleans.

There’s a lot of places I like to visit, but only a few that I’m sad to leave. Hawai’i and Puget Sound. If I work it right, I can get a Summer-Winter swing going on those some day.

That was confirmed 11 months ago.

For the past 40+ years, excepting this one, my family has stayed for a week on three mile island on lake Winnepasauke. It’s an AMC family camp, so we don’t have to cook the simple meals, they show up on a big communal table at meal time.

In addition to hanging out with friends and family, I sit by the side of the lake and watch the sun reflect off the water. I walk around the island. I canoe around the island. Sometimes I don flippers and swim around the island. Then I retreat to my quiet little cabin, smell the clean air, listen to the birds and red squirrels, and relax.

I’m always sad when I leave.

But part of that is just being on vacation. Yes, the place is wonderful, but so is not working and hanging out with people I’ve known for decades.

oh. feel stupid now.

Am I the only one who has never experienced this? Generally speaking I don’t mind being other places, but I can’t recall ever being sad to go back home once it was time to leave.

I love NOLA, but I can only get by on two hours of sleep a night for so long.

I’ve visited Edinburgh, Scotland twice, each time only for a couple of days, but I felt so suddenly and completely at home that I hated to leave. I’ve travelled a lot, and visited many lovely places, but there’s something about Edinburgh that just immediately captured my heart.

And, yes, one time was during the winter, and I found it absolutely lovely. It actually snowed a little, and the entire city looked stunningly beautiful, like a 3D black-and-white photo.

Not really leaving cities, but I definitely get this feeling when backpacking and leaving camp in the morning. Places I’ll probably never return to. I always take a picture or two of our camping location.
