We get a lot of solicitations from charities. We contribute to most of them too, but only once a year, while they solicit all the time. We subscribe to 5 magazines, two of which are weekly. I also insist that the government send me tax stuff by post. The federal gov’t is only too happy to set up an email account, but when they send something it is to my account on their site. They send me an email notification that it is there, but I have to sign on to their utterly opaque web site and somehow find it. After one year of this, I requested canceling the email account and they send it by post. We send cards, with checks enclosed to out 6 grandchildren for their birthdays, graduations, etc. and sometimes get an actual thank you note by post. And our real estate, school tax and water tax bills come by snail mail, although we pay them online. ---

More than most people it seems. I still write letters (with a fountain pen) and receive them back, from those of my longtime correspondents who aren’t dead yet. I prefer paper bills for many things. I get catalogs from suppliers of veterinary supplies, horsewares and the like. I tend to let magazine subscriptions lapse, but at present I’m getting Fine Gardening. Sometimes I get the New York Review of Books. My hamlet mails out a monthly “goings on about town” booklet. Most of the rest are requests for money from various charities, updates from the monastery I am associated with, and other miscellany. ---

Right, I forgot to mention alumni solicitations. You could change your name, get plastic surgery, shred all your credit cards and go off the grid on the northernmost Alaskan tundra, and your college alumni association would still be able to find you for fundraising appeals. ---

The only snail mail we get is whatever bank/investment statements and bills that don’t charge for the service. (and junkmail and other assorted advertising that still uses the mail service) ---

We also get junk mail for people who haven’t lived at this address in years, like yesterday’s crap disguised as IMPORTANT INFORMATION - 2D NOTICE. If there’s a suspicious whiff of spam/scams, I’ve started (accidentally) opening the envelopes so that I can toss them instead of going to the trouble of writing “Not at this address” on them and crossing the street to put the junk back in our mailbox. ---

We receive letters from our mothers, plus some random post cards and thank you notes. We send the same. Other than that, our snail mail contains a few bills and advertisements. I think this week we only had 1 or 2 pieces of mail. Fortunately we can block more junk mail, so we only receive advertisements which are addressed to us. ---

All my bills are online or autopay & paperless now, so I don’t have any more bills coming in the mail. I send out Christmas and birthday cards to a limited few folks, and get cards in return from them. Otherwise everything is junk mail. Oh - there is one magazine that I’ve never subscribed to or ordered anything from (I think it’s fingerhut, can’t remember now) and it comes like clockwork and on the front cover is always printed THIS IS YOUR VERY LAST ISSUE IF YOU DON’T ORDER NOW!!! I finally started keeping a count on that particular piece of junk mail. So far over the past 3 years I’ve received 28 of the very last issue. They haven’t kept their promise. ---

Nothing on a regular basis. Bills are all paid by direct debit. It’s at the point now whenever I do get a letter my immediate thoughts are “Oh shit, what have I done now?”. ---

For the first time since last Christmas (when I got a couple Christmas cards with handwritten addresses), I got a letter with a handwritten address today! And the whole letter was handwritten! I would share the whole letter but my typing is very slow so I will just give you the start: "Dear PastTense family, My husband and I invite you to watch this years Three-Day Convention called “Pursue Peace” presented by Jehovah Witnesses. At Isaiah 48: 17 & 18, God promises that Peace can become “just like a river”, serene, abundant and ongoing…" ---

I doubt I get any mail at all a majority of days. I felt similar unease the other day when an envelope turned up in the mail hand-addressed to me, with no return address.
