Do you get regular raises where you work?

LOL!! That’d make a good sig line! Don’t worry about your typing or spelling – it’s pretty obvious that you’re not stupid. It would have taken my hubby a half hour to type your post, there would have been plenty of typos, and there’s nothing stupid about him either.

I’ve heard this about hospitals – and nursing homes and child care centers too. It sucks, that the people in charge of caring for other people aren’t paid a decent wage.

COLA? What’s that? Really, the place where I work has not had a cost-of-living raise since I started working there. But the single thing that is causing the most disgust is the bonus system: the bonus is a percentage of salary, but the percentage depends on your base pay. So, $20K gets 2%, $40K gets 4%, $60K gets 6%… you can imagine how the lower-paid employees like it. Plus, the merit raises, in my work-group at least, are clearly determined by how close a friend you are to the manager. Well, one good result is that I am leaving to start my own business, which I might not have done had the pay situation been more tolerable… funny how this stuff was not mentioned when I was hired…

What kind of jobs are you talking about. I am not sure what a “State of California” building is or what its purpose is and I have no idea where to find one, and yes I will look in the phone book. What exactly would a “State of California” employee expect to gaurd?

Here’s the deal. There are three types of government jobs. Federal, State, and Municipal.

Whenever possible, go for Federal. You would be an excellant candidate for a Federal job, especially with your military background (I am assuming from your sig that you are ex-marine…btw, I work with three guys from that branch of the service). Right now, for Federal work, I know the Border Patrol is really looking hard for employees. (go to http://www.usajobs.opm.gov/bpa1.htm ).

State jobs are handled by Central Management Services here in Illinois. (Ever seen the Blues Brothers movie–the first one? The State of Illinois building is prominently featured in it. …the one in Chicago…) I have absolutely no idea what the State of California calls the personnel hiring arm of its government, but I’d guess it’s something similiar. Your congressperson would be of great help to you in this matter. Call him, or her, and talk to the person on the other end of your phone (it’ll be a secretary). Remember, your representative is there to HELP you.

Municipal would be the Police. Your city hall would have civil service test information. Remember, Politics get WORSE the more local the government is to you!

Let’s see . . . after my first six months, I received a $150/mo. raise. I received another $150/mo. after a full year. My second year, I received a $200/mo. raise. My third year (as of last August), I received a $200/mo. raise. In March, I received a $200/mo. raise because of a salary readjustment.

For the 1999 tax year, I received my salary plus an additional 34% of my salary in bonuses.

I love this company.
