Why, yes, I am avoiding work. My job this week is to facilitate layoffs of my co-workers and friends, so I hate myself and my job.
Here’s a four-part poll:
- What is the most likely disaster to strike the place where you live?
A Blizzard or Nor’Easter, perhaps an ice storm (Coastal Southeastern Maine)
- What disaster is less likely but still worrisome?
Hurricaine, tornados, Zombie Uprising
- What preparations have you made for such a disaster?

Home; We have our own artesian well, lots of water storage ability, and a pantry stocked with emergency provisions, I will be starting a veggie garden next spring , we have a family of almost-tame deer and some other wild animals on our property if we need a source of meat, we have a 1 acre pond stocked with Largemouth Bass, an apple orchard, blueberry bushes, the house is stocked with flashlights in strategic locations, as well as oil lamps, and flourescent lanterns, the house itself is a 200+ year old Colonial with three fireplaces and a woodstove, we have wood stocked in the cellar (we lose power on a regular basis even without disasters, so lighting and heating are important)
I have a stocked “Bug Out Bag” by the door ready if I need it (freeze-dried food, water purification stuff, a couple knives and flashlights, firestarting supplies, a tarp, etc…), the house has light-blocking curtains that can be drawn if we need privacy (or to prevent shambling Zombies from seeing inside the house and seeing our tasty Braaaiiinnns!), I have a few firearms and a small stock of ammunition for hunting and/or home defense if neccesary
Car; I have spare cold-weather gear in the trunk, a full-size trolley jack for tire changes, an Inova 24/7 LED signal light for breakdowns, jumper cables, a smaller car Bug-out-bag (the car is actually a bug-out device in and of itself) a magnesium firestarter and swedish firesteel
- Inapplicable.
