Nashville had catfish out of water In the first paragraph is a link so that you can see all 51 catfish. Actually, it is a fun project.
Houston had the cows in 2001 or 2002. Some people actually went around the city and got their pictures snapped with all the different cows. To these people I say: dude, get a hobby.
We, too, had the catfish. Some were very clever, such as the telephone lineman climbing a pole. I think we even had an Elvis in there somewhere.
For the recent Harrisburg installment of Cow Parade, a student at my school got to paint one of the cows. It was displayed in the foyer of the library for a few days. Quite disconcerting to walk into work and see this. (two more pics here and here) Supposedly it’s supposed to be a sunset skyline, but I swear that city’s on fire.
Also, I think Rochester, NY has (had?) horses.
Vancouver, BC, apparently has orcas. A cartoonist acquaintance of mine has offered his opinion on the matter.

I knew it!!! It is a conspiracy! Thanks, everyone, for the responses. It’s nice to know that we’re not alone with our equine invasion.

In Norfolk we have mermaids.
I’d be worried if just one really, really big cow/horse/moose/pig/whatever suddenly appeared.
Anyhoo…
Rockland, Maine has about two dozen or so LOBSTERS scattered around town, decorated in various ways. My favorite, natch, is the Patchwork Lobster. It’s covered in many different fabric squares, to resemble a patchwork quilt. I believe they were used as a fundraiser.
Kansas City had cows (as we are “cowtown”) and then pigs. The pigs were creepy.
Lawrence had giant fiberglass Jayhawks. Shudder.
The invasion of fiberglass animals is not limited to the United States.
In 2002, London, England was home to a herd of fiberglass cows.

Tulsa, Oklahoma is home to a colony of penguins.
Omaha, Nebraska has the J. Doe Project (sculptures in human form).
The statues have been auctioned off, but some still stand at their original locations.
Cedar Rapids did sculptures from American Gothic.
There’s a list of such projerts here.
Calvert County, MD is doing seahorses - I’ve seen quite a few of them. When the displays are done, they’re going to be auctioned off. I’d love to get one - I may go to the auction and see what they sell for.
New Mexico has painted ponies. I had thought the idea was already seeming a little less than original before they decided to do it here.
We just got back from a week’s vacation in D.C. The Pandas were six year old MilliCal’s favorite part of the trip. She wanted pictures of every one that we passed. There are still a few of the donkey-and-elephant statues left, too. Outside the Washington Post they have a trio – Donkey, Elephant, and Panda. (Apparently the donkey and elephant statues were called “Party Animals”. Hah!)
Even the little German town of Ellwangen an der Jagst (with a population of about 25 thousand) has 57 fiberglass horses. You can read about it (in German) here.
