Do you have a grocery shopping methodology?

OMIGOD!! I AM you!!

Shit, that explains so much…

Do you keep your pantry stocked systematically so you can always put together a meal from there?
Yes. I typically plan out two weeks’ worth of meals on grocery shopping day.

Do you always/never use a grocery list?
I always make a list.

Do you “coupon” (the verb)?
Almost never. Instead I opt to look through my grocery store’s flyer for deals. This week, for instance, they had boxes of pasta 5/$5, spaghetti sauce 3/$5, pizza sauce $5/5.

How often do you Big-Shop? How often "just grab a couple of things’?
I Big-Shop every two weeks. We probably make extra trips to the store about once a week, to pick up bread or milk or something I forgot.

How many people do you routinely cook/shop for?
Three

Do you enjoy grocery shopping?
No. No no no no no. Hate it.

Use convenience stores or warehouse stores or something in-between?
I generally shop at our locally owned grocery store. Sometimes I will drive 20 miles to Walmart, but the gas prices now make it hardly worth it for the few bucks I might save.

ETA: My grocery budget is about $150 every two weeks.

Yep, about the same. Depends on if we’re having more chicken or beef that week. Always more $ in the winter than summer, and we eat so much better in the summer, due to the produce.

We eat exceptionally well, to be fair. Although if I did what most people do and shop at just 1 grocery store, my bill would be closer to $180-200. I go to eight different stores a month not just to keep my bill down but because “one stop shopping” means poorer quality overall. Nothing at the “main” grocery store is the best quality and the best price.

If I shop at off-peak times, I spend maybe 15% more time total going to all those different stores as opposed to shopping at one store once a week on a Saturday afternoon.

Thing is, I actually feel like I’m splurging at bit at the $120 range for two. I could easily get that down by half, and still eat well. (Note: I am not including beer & wine in this amount. You could probably add another $50 a week just there, and sometimes closer to $75.)

**Do you keep your pantry stocked systematically so you can always put together a meal from there? **

Yes. I always cook ‘from scratch’, so there has to be a stock of flours, dried legumes, canned tomatoes, oils, vegetables, cheeses, etc.

**Do you always/never use a grocery list? **

Always.

**Do you “coupon” (the verb)? **

Never. I don’t shop at conventional grocery stores very often, nor do I buy things typically on coupons, so it’s not useful.

**How often do you Big-Shop? How often "just grab a couple of things’? **

I’m a half hour from any commercial area, and work at home, so almost every shopping trip is a big trip.

How many people do you routinely cook/shop for?

Two.

Do you enjoy grocery shopping?

Not really. It’s a tiring chore I try to get through with maximum efficiency.

**Use convenience stores or warehouse stores or something in-between? **

I get almost all my produce, fresh pasta, and local meat at the farmers’ markets, which are year around here; there is one somewhere in the county almost every day of the week. I get my dry goods, tofu, and what isn’t at the farmers market, at our local natural foods store. I also shop at Trader Joe’s for organic chicken, hard cheeses, beer, wine, plus a few speciality products like jarred sour cherries, dried tomatoes in oil, coconut milk, stuff like that. I have dairy goats and hens so I have my own eggs, soft cheese, milk, butter, yogurt.

I occasionally shop Safeway for toilet paper and detergent and cheap frozen meat for the dogs, and that’s about it. I would rather get a root canal than shop Costco or Walmart, which in any case are both a long drive. Such stores make me physically ill.

Wow 75, you guys drink well :p. Our alcohol bill is between 0 and 10 per week. It’s only close to 10 when my parents join us for dinner and their favorite restaurants tend to be BYOB and we usually supply it.

I just realized that my numbers include all of our Target shopping (paper products, cleaning supplies, most of my makeup, toiletries, etc). Our purely-food sum total should be much less, though I don’t have receipts for several months back and I don’t want to poorly guesstimate.

I could easily get it down by half too, and I know just where: cheaper coffee, cheaper cuts of meat, limited fish, cut out esoteric fresh vegetables, olives, prepared foods, and organic dairy. Sometimes I do this right before we’re about to spend a lot of money (like, before moving, for example). Mentally I think it’s time to clamp down and I do it almost involuntarily.

With how much decent beer or wine costs these days (although it’s mostly me with my beers), you’d be surprised at how easy it is to hit that.

Do you keep your pantry stocked systematically so you can always put together a meal from there?
Nope. Not really. I could probably pull something together if I really HAD to (I wouldn’t STARVE) but it wouldn’t be a whole meal.

Do you always/never use a grocery list?
Nope. Only when I’m getting something specific to make a specific meal from and I haven’t made it before.

Do you “coupon” (the verb)?
By “coupon” if you mean do we have a pile of coupons sitting on the counter that we periodically shuffle around until they expire or we are planning on buying the thing that the coupon is for, then yes.

**How often do you Big-Shop? How often "just grab a couple of things’? **
Big Shop? As in $100 or more? Once a month maybe. Just grab a couple of things? Every couple days.

How many people do you routinely cook/shop for?

Do you enjoy grocery shopping?
Depends. Husband always goes with me so it depends on his mood. It’s hard to explain and it isn’t interesting so I’ll just say I sometimes enjoy grocery shopping.

Use convenience stores or warehouse stores or something in-between?
Depends. Big Shop - we go to Lake Zurich to the WalMart there so once a month maybe. Warehouse Stores - don’t use 'em. Something in between? All the rest of our shopping. We go to Target, Eurofresh, Menard’s (they have cheap paper products!) and rarely Jewel or Dominicks.

This is the way I do it, too! Well, the expire part anyway.

I do a majority of the grocery shopping for 4 people (2 are small kids who don’t eat a ton). Once a week I make a meal plan for the week, looking at recipes I have saved (I like to cook), what we have in the pantry, etc, and make a list of what is needed to make those things. Then I add the usual staples that we buy each week (certain fruits and veggies for salads, chips and salsa, milk, yogurt, that kind of thing that is eaten most every week). Then things that are staples that have run out that week (olive oil, butter, things that aren’t purchased every week but are necessary).

I go to the nice, big grocery store nearby and buy anything that isn’t perishable in a a week or that will be eaten in a few days. Then over the course of the week I stop in the store for things that are needed (if we’re eating fish on Friday I’m certainly not buying it on Saturday!). Sometimes I go to the big grocery, sometimes to a specialty store, like the local farmers booth at the market for meat or something.

So yes, I always use a list. I also have a few things I always like to have around, but it’s not a hard and fast list. I have no interest in coupons. Saving money is welcome, but they’re not usually for things I buy, and I don’t have the patience to organize and collect them. If I find a coupon for something I use and need soon, I’ll use it of course.
