If it were up to me, all blinds and curtains would be open. I only close my bathroom or bedroom curtians/blinds when I’m in a state of undress. We live in a pretty isolated spot and no one is looking! But I live with my father and he likes the blinds down – but luckily not closed in the communal areas.
Our house sits back from and above the streets out front and on the side. We generally leave the front curtains open, but when the sun glares in, we’ll drop the blinds on the bow window till it sets. Neither of our spare bedrooms are occupied - they’re essentially storage rooms, so we keep the curtains closed.
There’s a window in our bedroom that faces the neighbor’s property, and I usually draw those curtains because they keep a security light on all night. The other bedroom curtain is only closed when my husband naps during the day.
I like light and I like to look in our yard. But we will close down tomorrow night - we don’t do Halloween. Bah humbug!
I work nights and sleep days, so “closed during the daytime” is my current default.
Depends on location and amount of sunlight.
My house in the mountains has windows east, south and west. The bathroom window has only about a handspan’s width of glass, yet I only need to switch the light on at night. It’s also high enough that nobody can see me unless I’m actually leaning out the window. So I may have the blinds down in order to filter the light or avoid glare, or if the temperature outside is above body temperature (which didn’t use to happen, but the last two years, it has). Other than that, they go up to let the sun warm the house.
I’ve had others where temps went above body temp for 7 months a year, or where I could trade a cup of oil and an egg with the neighbor from window to window. In those locations, the blinds and curtains got a lot more use.
- I loved the look in my brother’s face when, after ranting that in such a location as my house is in, any orientation but South is horrible “and I’m sure you didn’t take it into account and that means you’ll…”, he took a look at the actual orientation “… be… paying too… uh…”. I’ve got more sunlight than God
And, thanks to the previous owner having been a carpenter, double glazing and handcrafted hardwood floors.
I live on the 13th floor. I only close the curtains when the temperature outside drops below 10ºF.
I try to arrange my curtains in such a way so that I can see out from my sitting/laying down spots, but nobody outside can see me. I don’t care if outside can see my kitchen or my hallway or whatever, but when I’m relaxing/sleeping/on my computer, then curtains should maintain privacy.
I am lucky in that I essentially live alone*, and don’t have nosey neighbours.
*Currently I share a house, but not my room
We don’t have curtains. We don’t have neighbors either. Bliss.
Exception: we have bedroom curtains which are drawn on clear full moon nights because the light disturbs my husband’s sleep (he also can’t abide a ticking clock in the room, and I had to find a new home for my rooster).
Open blinds when we are home (except at night), closed or partially closed when we are out (for security). We’re set far enough back from the street that if people want to look inside, they’d have to come onto the property.
It depends. I don’t have any nearby neighbors so privacy isn’t a big concern.
If it’s summer and sunny and hot, I keep the curtains closed on the Southern side of my house to keep things cooler.
If it’s winter I tend to keep them open more to get more sunlight and warmth.
:oI’d probably open them during the day if I wasn’t so lazy, so they stay closed all the time.
“It’s curtains for you McGee!”
“Thanks! I needed some new ones.”
Mine are closed at night.
I used to work a 3rd once a week when I worked retail. I’d go home driving of course, in the dark looking in “all” the windows (from the road speeding by) and you see people sitting watching TV. I dont care to be seen picking my nose watching tv so the curtains get closed!:p:p
No, I used to have dreams when I was young that people would come to the window with less than good intentions looking in! :dubious::dubious: and they were scary lookin!!:eek:
