The President has a personal assistant who is always close by called a “body man”. Obama’s is named Reggie Love. The White House has a full staff of servants - cooks, maids, gardeners, a butler - quite possibly the most well-staffed mansion in the US. But they stay through administrations, while the personal assistant is selected by the President of First Lady.
I have one friend who is a live in housekeeper/babysitter. Maybe she’s considered a nanny but she doesn’t use that term. Mostly she grocery shops, cleans, and watches the kids when the parents go out. They pay her a pittance plus housing/food. She’s changed employers twice since I met her, but seems pretty happy with the current employers.
The husband of a former co-worker used to find an honest man, then teach him how to drive; rather than hire a “driver” when they were living in various places overseas. He felt it worked out better in the long run.
It depends on which employer they have, but also situation. For ordinary days, many can wear almost whatever they want today (as long as it was clean and not sex clothes). But sometimes when it’s some special event in the family (like birthdays, Christmas, party or whatever), such a girl may be required to put on white blouses and black skirts (paid by employer).
t depends like when i lived in uk i got 5 servants as i was from an affluent family and labour was expensive there then when i got great offer from mauritius i went there and still work there here labour is very cheap and i get good money[studied 10 years after all] and so i can employ many servants.i employed some black live in servants[sorry if u black but here its reality most blacks are poor] and it was so cheap compared to uk .i always were lazy and here its just like paradise.here yesterday itself a young girl 17 came asking me for a job i already have 14 servants so i did not employ her but u see as she was poor they do so .there is much difference between servants from uk and from mauritius .here they do more things accept the difference between rich and poor .in uk they did not bother as they will find other job quickly but here they do things so well as they dont want to be fired .examples of difference in uk before i went to work she brought my high heels but here she puts it in my feet and before going she will bow down i put my high heels on her knees she will polish it so thats the difference. in uk when i return from office i took out heels and relaxed servant took it away and brought me juice wine but here they themselves kneel down remove the heels and massage my feet u see that difference after i exercise they do not bother if my feet are dirty smelly they will massage it when they holf my feet i feel like they hold it like food even if its dirty smelly at first i hesitated to order them now they know their jobs at night while i relax feet up watch tv they will kneel down massage my feet and one my shoulders whereas in uk they just wait for order to serve u see here they think that ya they must do so to please me as they dont want to be fired they also think of the salary which is very cheap for me as very big
I work in development, and occasionally work with the Republic of Mauritius and similar island states. The above post shows just how far the international community is from achieving the Millennium Development Goals, let alone smaller-scale and less ambitious aspirations.
As you can see, economic inequality is devastating. There are people desperate for paragraph breaks and capitalization, but the twisted economic stratification has made importing them–even by the wealthy–all but impossible. Won’t you please help?
Alas, some of those servants in Mauritius might think that learning better English is a benefit of one of those poorly paid, demeaning* jobs in service. Then they go to work for somebody who is barely literate…
- Being a servant is not demeaning. Unless you have a boss who expects you to massage their filthy feet.
We have three, two of which are mandatory. One is at the gate to admit visitors and provide security. He has a radio to contact security or the police and a baton, but has never had to use them since we got here. It must be incredibly boring so we keep supplied with reading material, food & drink, and an iPod. This is 24h duty so he and another fellow work back to back.
Our second empregado is a driver which is a necessity, since traffic here is quite heavy and there are very few street signs. Much like the London cabbies, he has mastered “The Knowledge” for Luanda. He keeps the car at his house and shows up at 07h00 to take me to the office then checks back with Ms. DrumBum to see what happens next. If there is nothing pressing, he may head to the office to hang out with the other drivers, get some lunch, or run some errands. He picks me up at 18h00 and then heads home for the night. He has the weekends off unless we have told him earlier in the week that we have some plans to go out.
Our third empregada is a lady that keeps the house clean. Ms. DrumBum initially balked at the idea of someone to clean the house, thinking she could do the job, but realized that the house was too large so she relented and has her come once a week.
This all sounds a bit colonial but I can assure you that they are quite necessary and we consider them essential members of our family. After a considerable amount of urging, we have managed to get them to bring their families over to the house to celebrate milestones - graduations, marriages, and new additions. This is something quite rare and we were very pleased.
We have much to learn from them.
Sounds to me more like a foot fetishist writing wank material and inflicting it on an unsuspecting audience.
These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West…
Growing up in suburban South Carolina, we had one neighbor family who had a housekeeper. It always made me think of them as much, much more well-to-do than we were.
I believe one of my upstairs maids employs a part time cleaning wench to attend to her meager quarters. I’m not certain because I forbid my servants to speak directly to me or even make eye contact.
Can’t wait for the new season of Downton Abby.
My paternal grandparents had a cleaning lady that came 2-3 times a week to help with chores. She know provides cleaning services once a week to my aunt (paid for by my granny). Said granny widowed and moved with her older brother, and between the two, they employ 2-3 maids that come weekly to every other week and help clean the house.
They are the only relatives I know with service.
Our cat has 3 live in servants. Does that count?
I’ve known two people personally who had live-in nannies.
The first was a man who was divorced with sole custody of two preschool-aged children, one of them disabled. The mother was not in the picture at the time, and he also had a job with irregular hours and found out that a live-in nanny was less expensive than special-needs day care; the daughter is severely mentally disabled but not physically challenged. Whenever he was off work, the nanny was too. He dismissed her after a while, when one of his friends fell on hard time and he let the friend move in and live there rent-free in exchange for looking after the kids.
The daughter is now a young adult and lives in a group home.
The other one? Long story made short, she has 3 young children and is the type who’s probably hoping that at least one of them is autistic, so people will, like, worship her or something. IDK if she still has the nanny, because she’s currently involved in a seriously ugly divorce, and EVERYONE is totally siding with the husband even though the divorce kicked off with her filing a protection order against him. I worked with her, and she totally turned a department of more than 60 people upside down, and I was not the only person who was totally creeped out by her just from meeting her in the interview.
