Do you know what Creative (the company) is without looking it up?

OK I was curious so I checked, and the company is not and has apparently never been called “Creative Labs”, officially. They are registered as Creative Technology Ltd.. To make it even more confusing the Wiki on them seems to use “Creative” and “Creative Labs” interchangeably to refer to the company, and there’s no mention of the apparent ambiguity. But “Creative” seems to be the preferred moniker (in the Wiki), and judging from this thread it’s mostly the old folk who still think of it as “Creative Labs”.

Never hoid of 'em.

Definitely heard of them and I’ve had a few versions of their MP3 players. First one was great but eventually it wasn’t big enough when my collection was growing larger so I bought a new one. Second one was great too and still works, and dropped it a bunch, but the last time I dropped it it did some damage. I obviously damage parts of the memory from that particular drop because it would have to reload all the songs each time it turned off and it would still play but wouldn’t show what was playing. I bought another one after that and I did have some problems with the firmware since it didn’t recognize the full size since it was a brand new size. Really, that’s the only complaint I have with them is that they’re slow to update their software and don’t maintain software support as long as I think they should. Either way, that one got stolen several months back when my car got broken into. I haven’t replaced it since.

Either way, I’m not sure how anyone who knows about computers aren’t at least familiar with their name. Even if you don’t know them, a little bit of research should reveal that they are well associated with soundcards and mp3 players. And certainly their MP3 players are of higher quality and generally less expensive than an iPod too.

I knew it had something to do with sound, but wasn’t sure if it was speakers, sound cards, etc. Definitely not unheard of though.

I knew who they were without the Labs in the OP - love their MP3 players. My mom and my boyfriend both still use their Nomads, which are about the size of a Walkman.

I used to work for Creative, so yeah. We still have Nomads & Zens and all our desktops have Creative speakers. They aren’t the fabulous employer they once were, but their products are still very good.

Never heard of them. Actually, I don’t even know what a sound card is. I’m a good computer user and don’t touch nothin’.

Creative Labs’ Sound Blaster was the standard for sound cards in the 1990’s.

My first thought was “No.” Then when I realized that it was an mp3 player thing, I remembered that I actually a Creative Zen mp3 player.

In my defense, I generally refer to it as my “Zen” player. It works really well, and I’m happy with the product. Would recommend it to anyone needing a good player.

My first MP3 player was a Creative Zen Nano (that looked like this). But I couldn’t in good conscience give an answer as definite as “Of course!” since my response to the thread title’s question was something along the lines of “A company named ‘Creative’? I don’t know, what do they make? Wait a minute, wasn’t that MP3 player I used to use a ‘Creative’?” ::scrolls down to read the body of the OP:: “Oh, yeah, I guess that is what he’s talking about, then.”

I know Creative Loafing, but not Creative Labs.

My brain immediately said “Sound Blaster 16”, so yeah, I knew the company.

In fact, my Box’o’Computer Stuff That We Always Keep But Never Use is an old Sound Blaster box from a computer my parents had when I was a teen. It occasionally gets sorted through and dumped, but I honestly don’t think I’ve ever pulled anything out of it to use. Manuals, warranty cards, bolts and tracks for installing hard drives or other components… just a box of junk, really.

OK, I don’t feel as silly about my own response. Of course, I still own my Creative and still seemed to have forgotten about it…
