# Do you know what whoopee pies are?

I discovered them on a business trip to PA. Someone brought it in along with shoofly pie, and they wanted us all to try it before we left. Ummm, we leave at noon. So I had a Whoopie Pie (and have been told I am still not pronouncing it correctly) and man was that a ton of sugar. I was zinging! No way should that be fed to anyone under the age of 10! š
Edit: Iām from Iowa, and my colleagues at the meeting were from Brussels. I did not get a chance to get their unvarnished opinion, though I would have like to.

Yes, South of Boston. I had always assumed most people from New England knew what they were.

I live in New Jersey, but I was raised in Boston, and lived for two years in Maine, where Whoopee Pies are the offical state treat.
Of course I know what they are.

I just learned about them about a year ago (Iām 35). I had one a couple months ago, and it was all right but nothing special.

My wife makes Woopee pies from time to time. Carrot cake woopees, Peanut butter / chocolate woopees, Smores woopees. Mmmmmm. Basically any cake you can think of turned inside out, sort of. Before I met her I had never heard of them and I never ever see them in Virginia. In the south we would probably call that a Moon Pie.

Yes, my Amish/Mennonite grandmother made them and got me hooked.
Grew up in northern Indiana; now live in southern Maryland and can find them sold by the Amish that live in the area.

The first thing I pictured was Little Debbieās Oatmeal Creme Pies, so I think I have seen pictures of whoopee pies but have not actually encountered them in the physical world.

Iāve been thinking about that since answering the thread. While I canāt be sure, I think the answer is no - I found out about them here in New England.

Yep, I was gonna sayā¦theyāre usually not as good as they look, IMO.
Iām 33 and grew up in southeast PA, one county over from Amish country. Iāve known about them all my life, I think. š

Yes, and love āem. Rule of thumb, if the rack displaying Whoopie Pies isnāt within 10ā from the door of the establishment (usually a gas station) donāt buy one there.
From Boston, but lived in NH for a lot as well. I would guess most folks in New England would have heard of them. They go well with Moxie. (Thatās a lie, nothing goes well with Moxie.)

Until this thread I had no idea there were people _anywhere_ who didnāt. I just figured āWicked Good Whoopie Piesā\* was just a company trying to cash in on the eat local trend, not that it was a regional treat. No fluff, no whoopie pies, hot dog buns that canāt be toastedā¦man, Iām really beginning to feel bad for people who live elsewhere.
- which sadly are now merely good, not wicked good. I think they changed the recipe this year, with much drier cake being the result. Now Iād even rather buy the store brands than theirs.

I know that itās a sandwich-type thing with cake and frosting on the inside. I didnāt know what they were until I moved to Maine, but now I see them everywhere.
