I’m from Minnesota and my understanding is that a whoopie pie is two soft cookies with filling in between. But no one I’ve ever met is familiar with it. I only know because I have a book of martha stewart recipes.

Yes. I live in Ithaca, NY, but have a friend in Lancaster, PA, and travel to Maine a lot. I’ve read there is a battle between Amish country in PA and the state of Maine as to who gets credit for originating Whoopie Pies. I have no opinion on the origin of the whoopie pie, but side with the faction that says the ice cream sundae originated here in Ithaca.

Looked it up and see that they are also called black and whites. I’ve eaten black and whites but they aint whoopie pies.

ive heard of the term whoppie pie but i dont know what it is. I’ve heard of moon pies but they are only in the US… im from ont. canada and i think the same product moon pies is called Joe Louis.

My mom has made them from time to time over the years. The recipe she used is in the Woman’s Day Encyclopedia of Cookery, so not really regional.
We’re from the suburban part of the NY metro area.

What New Englanders call a Whoopie Pie is not the same thing as a Moon Pie, nor a Black & White/Half Moon.

I’ve known about them for a couple of years, because my wife knows [this woman](http://www.iwannabeadomesticgoddess.com/p/whoopie-pie-wednesday.html) professionally. She (the Whoopie Pie Wednesday lady, not my wife) is from a small town in Wisconsin.

They’re not even remotely similar. There’s no graham cracker, and they’re not dipped in chocolate. Instead imagine a firm cake aproximately 4" across and 2" thick (but cut through the middle like a hamburger bun), with a generous layer of thick frosting between the two halves of the cake.

Yupper. Grew up in southern NJ, college in nearby eastern PA, since then mostly in New England and eastern upstate NY, and can’t remember where I first encountered the things. Have never actually eaten one because they mostly seem to come in versions of chocolate, which I don’t eat. I would bake one for anyone who wanted one, though.
