# Do you know what whoopee pies are?

Jana’s Cupboard, in Jefforsonville, Vermont, makes some of the best whoopie pies anywhere. They closely resemble a chocolate-colored softball with a white stripe. Yum.

Yes, fabulously sweet and yummy. The closest thing I can think of to describe them is a Hostess Suzy Q.

Yes. I’m in Upstate New York. The best ones come from Mennonite bakers. I’ll be getting some at Windmill Farm & Craft Market in Penn Yann next Saturday.

Yes. North East England.
I first found out what they were a couple of years ago on a message board (possibly right here), but I’ve since seen that Asda supermarkets sell them here (or did a few months ago – I haven’t checked lately). Never had one.

I first heard of them maybe ten years ago, when a BBQ joint here in KY was selling them. It’s all moon pie territory in these parts.

Yep, it’s a moon pie. We’re in the FL panhandle that oddly enough has a Cajun influence. Mardi Gras is a big deal here. At Christmas everybody decorates with green and gold—maybe a little red stuff, which gets replaced with purple for the upcoming “real” party. lol (Now, if we were still in TN you’d have to drink a yaller dope with one of those things.) Oh! They’re thrown from the floats along with the beads.

A moon pie is a different thing. Growing up in Texas we ate moon pies and drank RC Cola (_sans_ peanuts for me, thanks), and that had a graham cracker crust.
The definitive proof, if you must, is that throwing a New England whoopie pie from a New Orleans balcony would create a real mess…it would be the equivalent of throwing a fistful of cake.

I do and I’m from Ohio, but I didn’t learn about them there.
I had a coworker, here in Florida, who came from a Mennonite family (most of whom are in Iowa). She brought Whoopie Pies to several work potluck events. She even froze one for me (I like candy and treats like that frozen). They are delicious.

While the word Pie is usually meant to describe cow excrement, in certain circles it sometimes means a particular type of dessert.

Dipped in chocolate != Not dipped in chocolate
But aside from the only three ingredients being completely different, yep, they’re identical.

Moonpies are eaten with RC Cola != Whoopie Pies eaten with Moxie
(Actually, that’s not true, Moxie is awful. But by gum it’s from Maine)

I was wondering about them being a Mennonite thing (my mom is Mennonite, and I’ve never heard of them), so I looked in my Mennonite cookbook. Well, what do you know - they’re not called Whoopee Pies, but there is a recipe for something that sounds similar (called Oreo Cookies) - two flattened balls of cake, with icing in between them.
