Yea, I had heard of them and seen them (OH), even hawked on a Home shopping channel, but they all seemed to involve a marshmallow fluff filling, and well, I rather dislike the marshmallow fluff stuff, so I was never interested in eating one. I have however had Oreo Cakesters, and damn, if those aren’t better than whoopee!
Ew, oreo cakesters taste awful. I prefer regular oreos to cakesters and regular oreos are the only cookies I’ve ever had expire on me. I’ve only had my own whoopie pies so maybe I just made them wrong but if oreo cakesters taste better than real whoopie pies, may I never eat one.
A critical update:
Just completed a New England road trip that was mostly in Maine. So I have no seen whoopie pies in person.
I have also had one. A Wicked whoopie pie. Bought out of the refrigerator case at the Jordan Pond House gift shop in Acadia National Park.
I have no idea where that falls on the spectrum of Whoopie pie quality but the verdict of me and my wife: Eh, certainly better than a Hostess cake-and-cream product, but that’s a low bar.
Defintely! My mom used to make them for us instead of cupcakes to take to school on our birthdays. Favorite treat of childhood.
Born and raised in the Bay Area (CA) for those who might wonder.
Yup, loved as a kid. From Syracuse, NY. Get 'em fresh from the Amish at the Farmer’s Market by MacArthur Stadium (was torn down and replaced by P&C Stadium and since renamed Alliance Bank Stadium, I believe)
Yes, Californian transplanted from western Mass.
I came here to say the exact same thing! I think they’re Mennonites, though - I bought a carrot cake from them last week and am ashamed to admit I ate the whole thing. Now Wegmans (supermarket) decided shoppers need a ‘dessert bar’ along with their hot food bar, soup bar, and cold foods bar. There are whoopie pies on display, but I don’t dare stop and take a closer look at the offerings.
I had no idea either. But wait..!
I’m originally from Lancaster, PA, the birthplace and rightful home of the whoopie pie. Of course I know what they are. I probably had one stuck in my mouth when I was teething.
I’m familiar with the term and have a rough idea of what they are, but I’ve never eaten one. I don’t think even the Mennonite bakery up the road carries them, although the Starbucks stand at the mall seems to have some.
I saw a Turkey Hill limited edition ice cream today in the freezer case today - Whoopie Pie flavor. Whoopie pies must be the new cupcakes.
I’m 37, live outside Washington DC in Northern Virginia and had never had them until I visited a huge Amish market in Ephrata, PA about 10 years ago and tried them. I’ve had them in chocolate with vanilla frosting, red velvet, chocolate chip, chocolate peanut butter (not very good actually), pumpkin, and oatmeal (which tastes like a Little Debbie but MUCH better).
I’ve not had one outside of the Amish markets that I’ve liked as much. The ones in my grocery store have crappy icing, or the cake part is too dry. The Amish ones seem to get it right every time.
It does seem like these will be the new “cupcake” with all kinds of crazy flavors and whoopie pie competitions on the Food Network and stores like Georgetown Whoopie Pie cropping up all over town. However they are a baked good that you just can’t fancy up very well, when the baker keeps it simple they are much better. Hmmm… just like cupcakes…
As I posted upthread, I had not heard of whoopie pies before this thread. However, I just got a sales flyer in the mail from Bed, Bath, & Beyond that features a whoopie pie baking pan.
I’m from TX and had never heard of them until a year or two ago when they became the new cupcake. The ones I have had from trendoid places tend to leave a whole layer of the cake on the top of my mouth, so I pass.
Sigh, I miss Wegmans… Have lived in Denver for almost 7 years and still call all grocery stores “Wegmans”.
My wife (from Albuquerque) gives me the Victrola dog head turn of not understanding and I have to explain.
Yes, and Pennsylvania, though I didn’t hear of them there - got a recipe from a friend in North Carolina.
They’re becoming quite popular around here these days. A year ago you couldn’t find them, now several stalls at the farmers’ markets have them (including one that has some interesting and tasty variants)
Rereading the thread, I see a lot of mention of them from Pennsylvania, though I managed to grow up without the knowledge of them! Of note, however, the friend in NC was also from Pennsylvania. Maybe they somehow skipped Harrisburg.
All you Moxie haters are a drag. Moxie is not that bad. I actually seek it out from time to time.
