In another thread, someone mentioned that one of the things he/she couldn’t care less about is MUSIC. Couldn’t understand why a noise would be entertaining to anyone. I am stunned. I thought that love of music (be it classical, rock, tribal, whatever…) was pretty much universal. So now I’m curious…is there anyone else out there that couldn’t care less about the organized arrangement of sounds? Why? I need details to understand this. Mucho Thankso. ---

I like music. But for a period of a couple years, ending only recently, I had simply stopped listening to it very often, didn’t purchase any new albums, my cd collection grew a layer of dust from being undisturbed, etc. Was simply focused on other things. If the question had come up during the peak of that period, I probably would have said something like “I just don’t care all that much about music anymore,” with a distinct shrugtone. ---

Silence, something about silence makes me sick… I like to have background noise, and music is perfect for this. Most of the time it doesn’t even matter what. I just put media player on shuffle and get a nice variety. When there’s no noise around, I start to get restless. ---

I’m the same way as you, C-goat (but I’m not so sure that’s a good thing). Silence makes me edgy. I just love music. Almost everything. It almost acts as an extension of myself. I’m always kind of dancing in my chair or singing (I even memorize lyrics of songs I hate!). ---

I’ve always been a music lover & can’t imagine anyone not enjoying some form of it. I do, sometimes, tend to find myself in the mood to listen to something, only I can think of nothing I actually want to hear. When it does happen (and it’s a rare thing) it’s typically at the end of the day when I’m stressed & traffic is a nightmare. Nothing sounds good to me, so I opt for silence. ---

that person was wack! i can’t be without music. got it on always, sometimes even when watching TV. got stereos everywhere! every car, the camper, the garage, every room in the house, the patio and every motorcycle helmet has speakers installed. (i work somewhere that has music in the air always) i had always found my grandparents house somehow “creepy” and couldn’t ever pin down what it was. after they both died, i was in the house and it occured to me that i had NEVER heard any music and the sliding glass door was NEVER open in that house. ---

**EchoKitty** I had the same reaction to that post. 😕 I’ve met a couple of people that didn’t like music, and their feeling about it was pretty much like mine is about sports. I just don’t get why people are interested in sports, and they just don’t get why people are interested in music. So, it’s live and let live. Recently a coworker told me that she went to the Boston Museum of Fine Art for a graduate course last week, and was so bored she left to get a slice of pizza across the street. I just couldn’t comprehend why. My husband asked me, “Have you ever been to a Red Sox game?” I said, “Yes, of course.” He asked, “Did you want to leave early?” And of course, I did. So now I understand. ---

Yeah, but MUSIC? It actually becomes a part of your body, as it must enter your ears and you can feel the vibrations and everything. Maybe that’s the turnoff…it’s too intrusive or something. I need music for all events. I can’t do it at work, and it truly sucks. But hey, I have youze guys to occupy my brain until the notes come crashing in again! ---

Being a musician, I’d have to say YES! 🙂 I pretty much like all kinds of music short of pop (and pop can mean country pop, jazz pop, or rock pop). I prefer my music to have a little passion in it and not just be created because it’s what the people will like. In fact, I’ve grown so tired of the major label music (because it’s over produced to sell) I’ve pretty much been only listening to indie artists these last few years from places like [www.ampcast.com](http://www.ampcast.com) Great stuff. ---

I actually have never met anyone who didn’t like SOME form of music. Some people are very picky but to not like any music would strike me as very bizzare. Sure, I can understand not being in the mood for it. Hell, I’m a musician and most of the time I listen to talk radio while I’m driving, especially after playing all night. I would almost go as far as saying that a person that doesn’t like any music, at all, ever, probably is somewhat unbalanced. That sounds harsh but… It reminds me of a quote. I think it is Shakespeare but not sure. In fact if anyone can help identify it, I would be grateful. I’ve had no luck whatsoever. I saw it hanging on a wall many years ago and tried to memorize it. I love music but I’m extremely picky. Out of 100 songs, I’ll probably only like five or six of them. The rest I’ll either tolerate or hate with a passion. ---

there’s a student in my department who doesn’t like music at all. one night we were both up late typing papers in our office and i and my headphones-of-joy were merrily bouncing in my chair. i asked him to what sort of music he listened and he said that he hated all of it and never purposefully listens to music whatsoever. it grates on his nerves and he’d rather sit in “peaceful silence.” then again, this is the same student who dislikes social-eating… ---

Like **Jenner** , I love music but am very picky. (I also love silence, which is a pretty rare commodity for me, seeing that I live in a noisy city of 11 million noisy people plus 2 or 3 quiet ones.) I don’t listen to Top 40 stuff, or anything on “normal” radio stations. But if it’s the right music, I like playing it or hearing it. (Actually, I like to play even music that I don’t like. Not a fan of country music, for example, but it’s kind of fun to play.) My father is the only person I know who never voluntarily listens to any music. He’s lived nearly 80 years, most of them bitter and unhappy. Don’t know whether there’s any causal relationship there. He likes silence–but not, I suspect, for the same reasons I do. He likes it because it doesn’t interrupt his fuming. ---

I have over 1000 CDs. It is safe to assume they are not all speeches and stand-up comedy. 😉 [sub]Actually, only one’s spoken word[/sub]. Love music (though mostly old stuff; I was born several decades too late in that regard). ---

I don’t really care for music. There’s stuff I’ll listen to, but I can do without. I haven’t bought a new CD in over a year, and I often don’t turn on the radio in my car. ---

I was the person in the other thread. I can honestly say I have no interest in listening to music. It just doesn’t appeal to me, people always have music around and it gets really annoying to me, it’s like having sports shoved into your face if you don’t like it. Try to imagine listening to a bunch of garbage about so and so sports league, that’s around the same reason I don’t like music I guess, just a random sounds put together that have no meaning to me. I cannot understand why people like it so much, especially any form of pop music or modern stuff, most of the music and words there is completely unrecognizable. ---

I have a hard time equating it to sports because sports are an activity. Music is more than that. It is a form of communication that is universal. I would be curious to know how much music you have been exposed to, other than “pop or modern stuff”. Also, whether or not you have ever been exposed to playing a musical instrument or learning about music. Could you elaborate so I may understand better? My intent isn’t to judge you but to better understand your position. Until this thread, I honestly didn’t think that there was anyone that didn’t like _some_ kind of music. I would have put money on it (glad I didn’t 🙂 ). And by “like”, I don’t mean “must listen to for a minimum of 5 hours each and every day”.
