What I hate is when folks who are old enough to know better run around saying “Eeeww! How can you eat that?! It’s so gross!” The only time one should comment on someone else’s food preferences is if it impacts you directly in some way you can’t easily avoid. (“No Honey, I won’t make red beans and rice the night before a long road trip.” Or “I’ve been nauseous since day one of my first trimester. For the love of all that’s holy, DO NOT open that can of sardines!” That sort of thing.) ---

I like a light dollop of mayo on my burger. Kraft’s Olive Oil Mayo is my new favorite. ---

I would say it’s probably 3 parts mayo to one part yellow mustard, with enough cayenne mixed in that the sauce is liberally speckled with red flecks. I don’t measure anything, I just know what color it should be. ---

Love mayo & lettuce on my burger. Sometimes add ketchup too. Don’t like tomato and remove it anytime I find a sandwich with a slice on it. ---

I hate mayo. It is second on my list of Foods That Are Frequently Where They Ought Not Be. (First place on that list goes to onions…dishes I’ve ordered that bore unexpected onions include corned beef hash, mashed potatoes, fettucini alfredo, teriyaki chicken, poutine — most won’t know what that is, but believe me, it doesn’t have fucking onions in it — and a grilled cheese sandwich. I _wish_ I were kidding about that last, but nope…bread, butter, Kraft single, and sauteed onions). Mayo is also a solid first on the list of Foods That Foodservice Workers Refuse To Believe You Do Not Want. I generally order my sandwiches “only meat and cheese”. A good 25% of them come with mayonnaise anyway. It’s not that the order-taker ignored me — they dutifully left off the lettuce, tomato, onion, and even mustard — but that they simply cannot conceive of a world in which someone might not want mayonnaise. It is, it seems, as intrinisic in their minds as bread to the whole “sandwich” concept. To a one, the look on their faces when I send the sandwich back, noting as politely as possible that mayonnaise is in fact neither meat nor cheese, tends to suggest that I may be of extraterrestrial origin. Maybe it’s a southern thing. ---

If there’s mayo around, I might put some on a burger. If there’s no mayo around, it hasn’t ruined anything at all, and I probably wouldn’t even wonder where it was. ---

I never put mayo on a burger I make myself, but if I order one in a restaurant and it comes with mayo on it, I’ll gladly eat it. ---
