This only happens to me occasionally when I’m falling asleep at night. I think of them as “thoughts that aren’t mine” because I’ll abruptly transition from thoughts that make sense to ones that are very odd and disconnected. Things like thinking about work then about forming a line to be behead by the queen (the current one in England, not the Red Queen, ftr). I know the thoughts are literally mine, but it feels like tuning into the middle of something being said over a radio or overhearing someone else’s conversations.

Although my “microdreams” aren’t the walking around, VR kind of dream. They are things like a strange dialogue, or a song (that I’ve not heard before).
Actually, dreams can and do happen in NREM sleep. You can Google Robert Stickgold and NREM to find some of his research into NREM dreams.
