I had an old Plymouth Fury named Christine. I don’t like to talk about it.

I’ve tried, because I have friends who do, but it didn’t stick. Vehicles to me have always just had descriptors relating to type, brand, colour and such. My car, the Ford, the stationwaggon, the blue car.

Some cars acquired names, others didn’t. Memorable included: the hit-mobile, the aircraft carrier, the [insert color] car, HAL.

I should mention, as a disclaimer, that I name pretty much anything and everything. So the fact that I’ve named my cars isn’t close to as weird as the fact I named my old couch (Charlie), laptop (Father John) and about a million other things…

That being said, I have two:

Old car’s name was Caty (or Cady), which is pronounced like “Katie”. I did this because it was a Cadillac Catera, so you could call her “Cady” for Cadillac, or “Caty” for Catera. It worked two ways.

Current car’s name is Phantom. I named him this because I bought him in November and, living in Indiana, we had one of those night where it snowed overnight, but the daytime temp was in the 50s. This meant all the snow melted. Well I hadn’t chosen a name for the car yet and the snow around the car all melted except for one area around the headlight and the front wheel well. It looked like the mask from Phantom of the Opera. So I said “Hey my car looks like the Phantom! I’ll name it that!” And the name stuck.

Well, I’m still on the first car I ever bought… a secondhand white Pontiac Vibe.

I was reading the first “Song of Ice and Fire” book at the time. So it became Ghost, after the white wolf in that book

I sometimes call my bikes by their common (amongst affectionatos) nicknames. The VFR is Viffer, and the KLR is Killer.
