Male, 48. Yes. I love clothes and have a vast and ever-expanding wardrobe; I am the only person I know who actually requires a hat stand. It’s fun to put selections together on different days, I get quite a few comments on what I’m wearing, and in turn I notice and comment when someone else, male or female, wears something that catches my eye. Besides, it’s a good way to be friendly and interested.

When I worked in offices, I barely noticed aside from occasionally noticing the “trying too hard, wears a full suit every day to a business-casual job” guy. Oh, and the one time I had a supervisor who dressed like she was going clubbing after work every day. I’m hardly one to judge, but it bordered on unprofessional and she was pretty high on the food chain, so it felt curious.

My current gig is boutique-y retail, so I keep an eye on my coworkers. Just helpful to know the image we’re projecting.

> I don’t care one whit what anyone around me wears, but last week I had a sharp lesson in just how judgemental other people tend to be about such things.
>
> I’ve recently started a new job. I’ve been there about 2 months. Recently, the company took on a new batch of trainees. One of them is a woman in her early 20s with a very eye-catching (and, in my humble opinion, very appealing) sense of style. It’s kind of hard to describe. It’s like a mish-mash of different fashions from different eras. The closest I can get to describing it is Twiggy meets Daisy Buchanan meets Mata Hari. I know that’s useless, but it’s the best I can do. Whatever you call it, it’s a bit ostentatious but she makes it looks damn good.
>
> Anyway, I’m one of two men on a team of about a dozen women, and _oh my God!_ The bitchiness and the slut-shaming the women on my team direct at this poor newbie is un-fucking-believable. With one exception, they’ve _all_ denounced her as a slut, or a tramp, or some equivalent. One of them, on seeing her for the first time, loudly exclaimed “What the fuck is _that?!_” It’s all behind her back, of course, but this new girl seems to have basically alienated herself from every other woman in the department, just because she wore red stilettos with black tights (at least, I _think_ that’s what the problem was).
>
> I must say, I found the sheer vehemence of their reactions genuinely a little bit shocking. Call me naive, but I had no idea women could be so judgemental of what other women wear. I mean, I knew it was a stereotype, but I’d always just assumed it was a silly and unfounded stereotype, like a sitcom trope or something. I’ve never actually seen it in action before. I guess being a woman is even tougher than I thought it was.

Whenever I hear conversations like that, I feel like singing “Meow, meow, meow” (like the song in that cat food commercial). 😛

Not sure why some women act this way – jealousy, maybe? Or is it a “how dare she be different from us?” sort of thing?

As for me, I would notice a person’s general style, but not specifics.

I work with a couple of colleagues that have a great sense of style. I compliment their outfits on occasion and pray no one notices what I wear.

I do on a casual level but other than I don’t judge people nor give it thought. When I see someone upon first glance, like a coworker my mind automatically takes in what they are wearing that day but I don’t think about it. It’s really hard to explain. If I am talking with you, you will NEVER see me eyeing you from head to toe, checking out your shirt, glancing at your footwear or the like. I don’t do it, because I already saw what you were wearing.

It annoys me, almost borderline pisses me off when I am speaking to someone, helping them or something and they are staring at my sweater, shoes. I always want to tell them to look at my damn face, or at least be a little discreet!! Men are the worst at this, women not so much. If it means anything I’m a young guy of 30.

About two years ago I was walking late one night from work and there was this one young girl, roughly late teens or early 20s with her mother, waiting to cross the street. The chick noticed me, and tapped on her mother’s arm all the while with her eyes fixed on my shoes and telling her to turn around. Sure enough the mom turns around and looks at my shoes while I am past. It was so maddening, come on!!

Anyways my current workplace is a live theater and we all dress casually. I know the general style of all my coworkers, but really don’t give it much thought. I do notice some of the patrons who dress tooun usually, but overall people dress normal. I noticed women more because I am attracted to them, I could not care less what men wear, young or old. My coworkers are overwhelmingly 20s to early 30s.

> There used to be a manager here who rotated two polo shirts. Yellow one day and green the next. Not sure if he had multiples of the same colored shirts or if he had only those two shirts. If I bumped into him on the weekend, he would be wearing one of those shirts.

Used to be an engineering math lecturer at my uni who had 5 polo-neck shirts, a colour for each weekday. He stopped being the engineering math lecturer after the engineering students worked out that he was also rotating his engineering math exam questions.

I’m an engineer. I don’t notice. My niece notices: when she was 6 she said “You’re wearing the same clothes you wore yesterday”…

I notice when someone has dressed really nice. And I notice when crew members wear the same tee shirt and jeans for a week. They look nasty and many times they smell bad.

I only really take notice if it’s something inappropriate. I have no idea if people pay attention to what I wear. It’s nice because I’m in different buildings, but this thread is so timely because I’ll be in the same building for the next few days and I was just thinking about how I could mix and match things so it doesn’t look like I’m wearing the same pants 2 or 3 days this week.
