This must count as another one of those days I’m thankful to be a vegetarian. Mind you, one of my friends bought some meat-free bacon (an abomination if ever there was one) and completely disregarded the instruction to cook it for 30 seconds each side. It came out like cardboard. In fact he tried to put a fork to it and the bacon shattered into bits that shot across the room. Anyone in the line of fire would have been in serious danger! ---

This ‘non-american’ bacon stuff sounds good. I usually cook my bacon so that it is soft and tender. And I like my eggs nice and runny too. (My friends make fun of me for undercooking my food.) So alot of the times I make myself a breakfast sandwich forkfull with bacon, egg, and pancake. However, crispy bacon that is made at a restraunt is always finger food. ---

Bacon should, strictly speaking, be warm and crisp but not rigid. Rigid or congealed bacon is uncuttable and therefore can only be eaten with your fingers. After a couple attempts I’ve just given up on eating any bacon that can be used to build walls: if I can’t stick a fork in it, it’s not going into me. ---

If it’s UK or Ozzie bacon, fork. For the American stuff, a fork is totally unsuitable. Since the people that servie don’t usually provide little lindividual sets of tongs to pick it up with, I use my fingers. ---

I use a fork, for two reasons. First, when I’m eating bacon, it’s usually with pancakes or the like, which will have maple syrup on it. I don’t make an effort to put syrup on the bacon, too, but it’s rather inevitable. So if I ate it with my fingers, I’d end up with sticky fingers, and maple-syrup sticky will last forever, until you have a chance to wash your hands (which might not be immediately after the meal). Second, if the bacon is fresh out of the frying pan, it’ll still have hot grease on it, too hot for manual handling. Even very crispy bacon is not difficult to eat with a fork. You just have to use a different technique. You don’t stab the bacon itself, rather, you stab around it, so you end up with the flat part of a strip of bacon between two tines of the fork. ---
