Do you read the New York Post?

This paper sound very much like Murdoch’s UK paper The Sun. They had the very same headline when the General Belgrano was sunk during the Falklands War, although they changed it for later editions when it was clear that there was a large bodycount.

I do read their baseball articles. For Baseball, I read the Daily News First and CBSsportsline second and then if I am looking for more, I pull from a pool of ESPN, the NY Post, NY Newsday, NY Times and the Newark Star Ledger.

Otherwise the Post is a dismal rag and has been my entire life*. But it is probably the 5th best Sports pages in the NYC area.

  • Please note, this means, I feel the Post was crap pre-Murdoch

Last time I was in the city there were hawkers on almost every corner of Eighth Avenue, from 34 to 57 Street, giving it away for free.

I had to change my longstanding policy of “I would only read it if it were free” to “I would only read it if they paid me.”

Next time I expect the hawkers to have rolls of quarters as well as bundles of papers.

Slight hijack: Why can’t all newspapers go to a tabloid format? (as in opens like a book, not written like the Enquirer) Unless you are in the comfort of your own home newspapers are a pain in the ass to read. Ever try to wrestle the New York Times in a diner? Impossible.

We sell the Post at work but I do not read it. Why would I? I live in Florida and we have our own (quite good) newspapers.

Bump.

I agree that the tabloid format is much easier to handle and more convenient. But I think the association of tabloid=crap is so strong that self-respecting newspapers are reluctant to try it.

When I lived in NYC, I think we got a free week’s worth of the Post for some reason. If I recall correctly, they just started shipping it to us as a promotion. After I leafed through the first one, all subsequent copies went immediately into the garbage. So I can proudly say, “I wouldn’t read it if it were free.” And, why are they still obsessed with “Jacko”? At least when I was there a couple years ago, they found some reason to put Michael Jackson on the cover a couple times a month. Let it go, guys.

In the UK, most of the broadsheets now publish a tabloid-sized version; and some of them have changed over completely to this format. Since the UK sets the trends for the rest of the world*, you should be getting this soon.

*May not actually be true.

On Sunday, I decided to buy the Daily News. I’m thinking of switching.

My father was born and raised in NYC. He had this system for reading the New York Times that involved complicated folding so that it took up very little space. This was years ago (1960s-1970s), when I believe the paper used was even bigger than it is now. He claimed he learned how to do this by reading the paper on the subway each day where there were a lot of people crammed in a small space. He said a lot of people did the same thing, at least back then.

I have been living in the Boston area for over 20 years now but I do read the NY Post sports online from time to time, more during baseball season. If you’re looking for coverage of the NY teams they are a decent source.
