I don’t own a cell, and happily so. I used to, and I didn’t care for it at all.

When the landline rings here, my husband and I just look at each other for a moment, saying to each other with our eyes, “if it’s important, they’ll leave a message,” and we get on with what we were doing without a single spoken word.

The only people my husband calls is me or his best friend, the only people I call is my husband, mother or grandmother. We take incoming calls from his father if we see who it is on caller ID. Everything else is worthless to us - if it is important, like the bank or my lawyer or something, they always leave a message and we get back to them.

I was more of a chatter as a teenager, but as I got older, I became much less of a phone person. I’d rather see my friends face to face, when possible. I live a quiet, peaceful life. Adding more ringing, buzzing, beeping things that interrupt me is just adding annoyance to my world. Like adding leeches to a pool.

I keep mine with me pretty much all the time, but only get about a call a day, and that’s usually an email from my wife. It’s actually more important to me as a substitute wristwatch.

Mainly, I use it for contacting the office of my part-time job (I go directly from my house to the job sites, rather than stopping at the office), and for tracking down friends when we’re trying to meet somewhere outdoors.

It costs me twenty cents to send a message to a friend. On weekends, it’s free. Calling is between $0.50 and $1.50, depending on the time of day. If I need an immediate response, I’ll call someone, otherwise I’ll text. I hate talking on my phone in public (I forget about an ‘inside voice’) so I’ll text my friends. It’s a different way to communicate, definatly less personal that calling, but also less intrusive.
