Do you sew and mend your clothes?

I haven’t lately, beyond hand stitching for repair occasionally, but I learned to sew when I was just going on 16. I made most of my clothes in HS, and when I got married and had a little one, I made a lot of her clothes too. Many years later, when I had another baby (surprise!), I made a lot of his clothes. I need to get back with the program!

I don’t know how many seperate items I’ve made, I’ve totally lost count, certainly 100 or more. But it’s been several years since I’ve sewn anything. I mostly sewed by machine except for finishing details and hems. I made dresses, skirts, pants, jackets, overalls and shirts.

When I was a young single mom, money was tight, so I’d go to the thrift store and buy big mumuus, super-sized pants, and shirts in pretty colors. I once made the CUTEST pair of oshkosh b’gosh lookalikes for my daughter out of the material from an extremely large pair of jeans. Unfortunately, I’m not the only one who knows that trick, so nowadays it’s really hard to find pretty material in large sizes. Plus even thrift stores are a little too proud of their stuff these days.

I haven’t ever been able to get the hang of either knitting or crocheting, though I did embroider for many years (learned at the same time as when I learned to sew). I have never spun anything or made my own fabric, though I have dyed my own fabric before.

I don’t know about “ancestor” but my Aunt Vonnie, my dad’s eldest sibling, is the one who taught me both to sew and embroider. She taught me to embroider while I was sick. In 10th grade I came down with mono, strep throat, and tonsillitis all at the same time and was out of school for 6 weeks solid. It was sheer hell, I couldn’t even ***squeak ***my throat was in such bad shape (not fun for a chatty Cathy), I did a lot of embroidery.

I sew, knit, and weave. I am a fourth-generation weaver, with all my kids learning the skill, so that’s as far back as ‘ancestors’ go.
I have carded and spun wool, but I’m not very good at it.
I embroider and cross stitch, and have taught lots of kids to do it.
I buy pretty much all my clothes, although I made my kids clothes when they were small.
I have a sewing machine, and teach sewing at school.
I have picked cotton. Does that count?

Old, long divorced guy here. I can replace buttons and repair small rips. However, if it shows, it usually means changing it from office clothes to yard working clothes. I went to the Victor Frankenstein school of sewing.

You can track when a repair on my favorite black coat was done by how well I repaired it. Repairs range from awful to invisible. Last year, I mended some tears in one of my niece’s skirts so well that I couldn’t find them when I had finished.

I’ve also sewn some SpongeBob toys for her.

I have sewn my own clothes in the past. I may do so again in the future. I do mend in past, present, and no doubt future.

Yes. And crochet, felt, tat, spin, weave…

Pretty much anything and everything - natural, synthetic, commercially made, homemade, recycled, exotic, recycled exotic…

At this point? Uncountable. I’ve been doing that sort of thing for… oh… over 40 years now. A lot of stuff.

Right now, buy clothes. Have made clothes in the past, but right now my time is taken up by other things and interests.

Yes.

Both.

Yes to both.

Yes, and yes. Also have spun dog hair, human hair, and various plant fibers other than cotton.

No and no.

However, as a point of interest I not only mend clothes, I also mend shoes and boots. In fact, I do that for a living, being a professional cobbler right now. The prior sewing/craft/leather skills I acquired have proven very useful in the current job.

Broomstick, being a cobbler sounds like a cool job. Is it? I think in the past you used to do construction work; is being a cobbler easier on the body? (Maybe you could start an “ask the cobbler” thread.)

Do you sew and mend your clothes? Yes

Do you knit? Yes, and crochet

What kind of fabric do you use? Usually cotton, but I have sewn with many other fabrics.

How many objects have you made by means of sewing or knitting?** I couldn’t begin to count. I’ve been sewing, crocheting and knitting for 35 yrs.**

Do you buy clothes or make your own clothes? I have sewn and knit articles of clothing for myself, but generally buy my clothes.

Do you embroider? Yes, since I was 4 yo I have done freehand embroidery as well as cross-stitch and counted cross-stitch.

Do you use a sewing machine to make clothes, or do you sew by hand by stitching together fabrics?** Usually a sewing machine, but often items need finishing details done by hand.**

Do you make your own fabrics, or do you buy them? I buy my fabric, but my mother weaves.

Have you ever used a spinning wheel to make yarns of wool for knitting?** Not a spinning wheel yet, but I’m getting my mom’s old one next week. I have used a drop spindle for spinning yarn, though.**

What about cotton? Do you have any ancestors who spun natural fibers or made clothes for a living?** Not for a living, but my mother would sew nearly all of my school and church clothes when I was a child. My grandmothers both could sew, embroider and do other fiber arts.**

Did they teach the skills to you? Yes. My mother taught me sewing and embroidery. My grandmothers taught me crochet and knitting.

It can be. Other days it can be like any other job on a bad day. Mostly, I enjoy it.

Hell, yes!

Already did so here

Don’t know how I missed that, Broomstick but thanks for the link.
